One of the main purposes of this study unit is to help students to start planning their own thesis. It is possible to use this study unit to prepare the actual plan for your thesis.

It is strongly recommended to have a commission for your thesis (by any company or organization, your own employer, for example). At the beginning of the study unit, some thesis topics may also be offered in e.g. Laurea projects (depending on availability).

However, you may complete the study unit even though you do not have the topic yet in mind, and proceed with your thesis later using what you have learned.

Evaluation is based on assignments of the study unit.

- R&D plan (individual or pair) forms 50% of your grade. Note that working as a pair requires a more extensive R&D project to plan (roughly 15 credits per student)
- Methodology assignment (individual, pair or small group forms 50% of your grade.

Further information for students

A student who has not completed the assignments or exams set for passing the course must complete or renew his or her performance in the manner and within the time specified by the teacher of the course. A failed exam or other performance can be renewed twice. Failure to participate in the actual exam is counted as one performance. (Laurea's degree regulations.)

All Laurea students are expected to adhere to good scientific practice, including appropriate citation of sources. Familiarize yourself with and ask about these practices if necessary. All study assignments are done as individual work, unless otherwise instructed in the assignment. The teacher will inform separately if Turnitin will be used for the reports.

The assessment of competence focuses on the objective descriptions of the curricula and the level of competence is assessed on the basis of the assessment criteria announced in the Study Implementation Plan (Laurea's degree regulations).

“Students who have failed assignments or examinations required for passing a study unit must supplement or retake their study attainment in a manner and schedule defined by the teacher of the study unit. .. A failed examination or other study attainment can be retaken twice. A failure to attend an actual examination is considered to be one completion attempt.” (Laurea degree regulations.)

Teaching methods

Daytime learning:

A Canvas learning environment is used to support the implementation, but it is important to take part in teaching and guidance on campus according to schedule. The study unit includes working in pairs or groups. You will receive individual feedback for assignments from the teacher, and working life or peer feedback may also be utilized.

Alternative completion methods of implementation

According to the degree regulations (2024), "Students are entitled to apply for recognition of prior learning regardless of where, when and how the competence has been acquired. ... At Laurea, there are two different procedures for the recognition and accreditation of prior learning: a) accreditation of prior learning (competence acquired in higher education studies at another institution) and b) demonstration of competence (competence acquired in other ways). The recognition and accreditation of prior learning is initiated by the student themselves. The student is responsible for demonstrating and verifying their competence. Co-operation with working life and/or RDI

We will work on improving our research and development skills. This course will include and address some work-life-related research and development issues.

The study unit corresponds to the requirements of Bachelor's level education.

The prerequisite for participation is always that the possible competence prerequisites according to the curriculum (previous study or similar competence) are fulfilled. - gather meaningful information and use their knowledge basis

- use essential professional concepts when explaining various work practices and situations
- search for information in different sources
- report in a clear manner



“Students who have failed to demonstrate their competence in accordance with the approved level must supplement or retake their study attainment in a manner and schedule defined by the teacher of the study unit. If the student does not pass the assessment despite the opportunity to complete their study attainment, they must complete the study unit in question in full as specified by the teacher.” (Degree regulations 2024.)
