- communicate in oral and written English in work life situations in their own sector at proficiency level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference
- tell about the studies and work experience in correctional services, discuss the situations of different target groups and meet clients in a variety of different situations
- use the key English-language correctional services terminology used by professionals
- use research information and topical information about the social services published in English
- develop their interaction, communication, information search and reporting skills in English in professional situations in correctional services
- develop their professional language skills by using different types of learning techniques and tools

Teaching methods

According to the learning objectives on completing this study unit, you will be able to:
communicate as a professional in field-specific tasks;
speak and write English with the understanding of the appropriate style and register;
identify personal developmental needs in communication and language skills and develop realistic strategies for improvement;
search for information from professional publications and databases.

During this study, you will practice various oral and written communication skills. This course is partly implemented through a Seppo virtual game called International Correctional Services Officer of the Year 2024.

The competence areas covered in the course include:
communication skills needed for the workplace including presentations, describing services, interviewing skills, reflective skills, etc.;
career development;
intercultural competences;
field-specific professional vocabulary.

They can achieve communication objectives in a range of work-related situations, modify their communication style according to context and the requirements of the message, and manage interpersonal interactions with people from different backgrounds. Spoken fluency and range are sufficient to manage common professional situations. Writing shows satisfactory control of grammar and lexis for the production of standard professional messages.

Evaluation criteria, good (3-4)

Students demonstrate a good understanding of the principles of effective communication for professional purposes. They are able to achieve communication objectives in a range of work-related situations with a degree of success and can adapt their communication style to suit the requirements of audience and context. Speech is fluent, with a high degree of grammatical and propositional control. Writing shows good control of grammar, lexis, and style in a range of texts for professional purposes.
