Teaching methods

The study unit will be implemented as a blended learning format throughout the spring semester of 2024, meaning that, in addition to independent study, there will be three separate instances of contact teaching sessions at the Leppävaara campus, which will not be recorded nor live-streamed. Additionally, scheduled guidance meetings will be held through Teams or Zoom. Participation in contact teaching sessions and guidance meetings are optional but highly recommended. The study unit requires active engagement and commitment to interactive learning.

You will study within the comprehensive learning environment built in Canvas, which includes study materials and assignments. The Canvas workspace will be accessible on January 9, 2024, at 9:00 AM. The schedule and assignment deadlines are provided in the Canvas timetable, as well as in Pakki's calendar.

During the study unit, there will be several different learning assignments available, which will be completed in pairs. Choose with your pair one assignment from the T1 module and another from the T2-T8 modules. The online exam is an individual task. Submit the assignment returns in Canvas, through which you will receiver feedback from the lecturers. The T1 assignment shall also be submitted to the Teams workspace, where the industry partner will provide you feedback.

Alternative completion methods of implementation

According to Laurea's degree regulations, "All students are entitled to demonstrate their competence. The recognition and accreditation of prior competence is initiated by the students themselves. The competence is recognized and accredited by the teacher responsible for the studies or another person designated to the position.

The assessment is carried out according to the same assessment criteria and, as a rule, same grading scale as that adopted for the corresponding study unit or module.

The student is entitled to apply for accreditation of prior competence regardless of where, how and when the competence has been acquired. The student may also seek accreditation of competence to be acquired on the job as part of their degree (work-based learning). The competence to be accredited must be in line with the learning outcomes of the degree programme’s curriculum. The student is responsible for demonstrating and verifying their competence and for providing sufficient information.

Students should apply for the accreditation of prior competence at the beginning of their studies, so they can progress in their studies without interruption. However, students are entitled to apply for accreditation of prior competence throughout their studies."

For more information, please refer to the student intranet.

Co-operation with working life and/or RDI

In Module 1, there are different learning assignments available, which are made in close collaboration with the industry partner. Outputs developing of organizational risk management and safety & security culture are produced for the industry partner. Moreover, in the learning assignments of modules T2-T8, the knowledge base of risk management and organizational resilience are reflected from the perspective of a real organization.

Evaluation methods and criteria

Competency assessment is based on the curriculum's objective descriptions, and the level of competence is assessed according to the evaluation criteria specified in the study implementation plan (Laurea's examination regulations).

The assessment focuses on three areas of competence: 1) Developing organizational risk management and safety culture (2 credits, weighting 20% of the entire study unit), 2) Applying risk management and resilience in the organization (2 credits, weighting 20% of the entire study unit), and 3) Requirements for risk management and safety (6 credits, weighting 60% of the entire study unit). Development tasks have been assigned for the first two areas of competence, and an online exam is assigned for the third area of competence. The evaluation criteria are specified in the assignment instructions. Points are awarded for the tasks and the exam, which determine the grade obtained for the study unit. Each task can earn a maximum of 0-20 points, and the exam can earn a maximum of 0-60 points. The exam is considered passed if you score at least 15 points. Therefore, the maximum total points for the course are 100. The grading scale is as follows:
0 - below 50 points = fail
50 - below 60 points = 1
60 - below 70 points = 2
70 - below 80 points = 3
80 - below 90 points = 4
90 - 100 points = 5.

A student who has not completed the required tasks or exam to pass the course shall make up or retake the assignments as determined by the course instructor within the specified timeframe. A failed exam or other performance can be retaken twice. Failing to participate in the actual exam counts as one attempt (Laurea's examination regulations).

All Laurea stakeholders are expected to adhere to good scientific practices, including proper referencing of sources. Familiarize yourself with these practices and inquire if needed. All study tasks are to be completed individually unless otherwise instructed. The use of Turnitin for plagiarism checks will be explained by the instructor.
