Learning outcomes

The student is able to
- comprehend and describe the operations and protocols in global
IP networks
- calculate IP subnets and supernets
- comprehend and describe security vulnerabilities in IP network
infrastructure
- compare and contrast IPv6 to IPv4
- comprehend and describe the functional concepts and security
risks in wireless networking
- comprehend and describe the functional concepts and security
risks in cloud computing

Materials

Studies during this study unit are based on lectures and lecture materials. Lectures are recorded. Material for additional support and/or further reading will be announced at the beginning of the study unit or theme.

Teaching methods

The study unit is available on-line. Participation to the on-line lectures, discussions and group work is expected.

Employer connections

The study unit has guest lectures from visiting working-life experts.

Completion alternatives

If the student is familiar with the themes covered in the study unit, it is possible to contact the lecturers before the study unit begins or within the first week after the first meeting to discuss the possibility of recognizing and demonstrating the skills in the HOT-process.

Student workload

The student is expected to be able schedule his/her work according to the the schedule of the study unit implementation. Approving any late work is in the lecturer's discretion.

Content scheduling

The study unit contents at a glance:
- IP networks (subnetting and supernetting. Manual calculation of IP subnets).
- Configuring switches and routers - basics.
- ISO/OSI network protocol model and networks security.

Themes 2-4 are based on expert lectures on contemporary network security related issues. The themes will be published as soon as the guest lectures are agreed and verified. Examples from previous years:
- IPv6 networks and security
- Wireless and mobile networking security issues
- IoT and its' security
- Public cloud security
