Learning outcomes

The student is able to
- utilise and use the most common appropriate digital tools of the working life
- communicate appropriately and in a goal-oriented way in the communication and social situations required by the working life
- evaluate information critically and can descibe the basic principles of information security and privacy

Teaching methods

The course is conducted in the Canvas learning environment. You can complete this course flexibly at your own pace. The course has a recommended schedule, but deviating from it won't affect the assessment, as long as you complete the course by its final availability date.

NOTE! The course material is in Finnish, but you can translate most of the assignments to English using browser's translation function.

Registration is open continuously, and new registrations are accepted approximately once a week (less frequently during holidays).

Completing the course requires participants to have access to a computer and an internet connection.

The scope of 3 ECTS credits means 81 hours spent on studying.

Content and scheduling

Upon completing this course, you will be able to:
• Utilize and effectively use common digital tools in the working environment.
• Communicate purposefully and effectively in communication and interaction situations required in the working life.
• Critically evaluate information and describe the fundamental principles of information security and data protection.

The course consists of five modules: Information Technology, Communication, Information Retrieval, Image and Video, and Security. The course includes online materials, exercises, and assignments.

Further information for students

Many modern web browsers offer the possibility to translate web pages into different languages. Here are instructions for the most popular ones:

Microsoft Edge:
1. Open the webpage you want to translate.
2. Click on the three dots in the upper right corner and select "Translate".
3. Choose the desired target language from the dropdown menu.

If the translate button is not visible, you can enable the translation feature in Edge's settings:
1. Open Edge settings.
2. Go to the "Languages" section.
3. Enable the "Offer to translate" option.

Google Chrome:
1. Open the webpage you want to translate.
2. Click the translate button in the right edge of the address bar (the symbol is a sort of bookmark or A-letter within brackets).
3. Choose the desired target language from the dropdown menu.

If the translate button is not visible, you can enable the translation feature in Chrome's settings:
1. Open Chrome settings.
2. Go to the "Languages" section.
3. Enable the "Offer to translate" option.

Mozilla Firefox:
Firefox does not offer a built-in translation feature, but you can use translation extensions like "Google Translator for Firefox". Here are the instructions to enable this extension:
1. Open Firefox and go to Firefox's add-on management.
2. Search for "Google Translator for Firefox" and install it.
3. Open the webpage you want to translate, and click the translate button in the browser's toolbar.

Safari:
1. Open the webpage you want to translate.
2. Click the translate button in the right edge of the address bar (two A-letters).
3. Choose the desired target language.
