Learning outcomes

The student is able to
- describe the structure and operation of data networks in relation to the following terms: Local area networks, wireless networks, internet
- describe the functionality of IP-networks and key internet protocols
- implement and maintain basic services in a local area network
- justify the importance of information security according to the CIA model (Confidentiality, Integrity and Availability)
- identify common information security threats faced by organizations
- implement basic level information security safeguards for local area network

Teaching methods

The study unit is based on working in virtual learning environment. There are on-line meetings during the implementation. While it is not mandatory to attend the meetings and lectures, it is highly recommended.

Learning materials and recommended literature

In addition to material presented in Optima workspace students are encouraged to use
CCENT/CCNA ICND1 Official Exam Certification Guide 2nd Ed. ciscopress.com
CCNA ICND2 Official Exam Certification Guide 2nd Ed. ciscopress.com (or 3rd Ed.)
and other material presented at the beginning of study unit.

Alternative completion methods of implementation

If a student already has experience and skills in working with IP networks and IP protocols, he/she is adviced to contact the lecturers before the study unit starts, or no later than within a week from the start, if she/he is interested in demonstarting his/her skills according to HOT-process.

Important dates

Attending the first on-line meeting is mandatory. If this is impossible, the student should contact the lecturers beforehand to verify his/her enlistment to the study unit.

Students workload

The implementation is quite fast paced. Keeping up with the studies and deadlines is essential. In addition to the scheduled meetings, extra on-line meetings can be arranged to support the studies when necessary.

Content and scheduling

The study unit introduces students to networking basics (with emphasis on IP networks and protocols). The goal is to reach a level of expertise that makes it possible to secure local area network and to identify essential security threats and vulnerabilities in WAN networks. The learning content is divided into four themes. Each theme begins with an on-line meeting/lecture, and continues with working on-line - either individually or in groups. The study unit implementation is designed to take the 1st half of the spring semester.

Grading scale

H-5

Evaluation methods and criteria

The evaluation is mainly based on student's work in the assignments in Canvas. Active participation during the on-line meetings may be credited.

Evaluation criteria, fail (0)

The student has not demonstrated learning and skills on adequate level in the course work.

Evaluation criteria, satisfactory (1-2)

The student demonstrated learning at adequate level.

Evaluation criteria, good (3-4)

The student demonstrated good learning outcomes and participated actively in the work during the study unit implementation.

Evaluation criteria, excellent (5)

The student demonstrated excellent learning outcomes and participated actively in the discussions during the study unit implementation and on-line meetings.
