- describe the structure and operation of data networks in relation to the following terms: Local area networks, wireless networks, internet
- describe the functionality of IP-networks and key internet protocols
- implement and maintain basic services in a local area network
- justify the importance of information security according to the CIA model (Confidentiality, Integrity and Availability)

Materials

In addition to material presented in Optima workspace students are encouraged to use
CCENT/CCNA ICND1 Official Exam Certification Guide 2nd Ed. ciscopress.com
CCNA ICND2 Official Exam Certification Guide 2nd Ed. ciscopress.com (or 3rd Ed.)
and other material presented at the beginning of study unit.

Teaching methods

The study unit is based on working in virtual learning environment. There are on-line meetings during the implementation. While it is not mandatory to attend the meetings and lectures, it is strongly adviced.

Exam schedules

Attending the first on-line meeting is mandatory. If this is impossible, the student should contact the lecturers beforehand to verify his/her enlistment to the study unit.

Completion alternatives

If a student already has experience and skills in working with IP networks and IP protocols, he/she is adviced to contact the lecturers before the study unit starts, or no later than within a week from the start, if she/he is interested in demonstarting his/her skills according to HOT-process.

Student workload

The implementation is quite fast paced. Keeping up with the studies and deadlines is essential. In addition to the scheduled meetings, extra on-line meetings can be arranged to support the studies when necessary.

Content scheduling

The study unit introduces students to networking basics (with emphasis on IP networks and protocols). The goal is to reach a level of expertise that makes it possible to identify network security threats and vulnerabilities. The learning content is divided into four themes that are scheduled to last for two weeks each. The themes begin with an on-line meeting/lecture, and continue with working on-line - either individually or in groups. The study unit implementation is designed to take the 1st half of the spring semester.
