Discovering Tourism (5 cr)

Learning outcomes

The student is able to:
- define tourism as a part of the global economy
- analyse the tourism sector

Content

- Travel and tourism sector in Finland
- Tourism organizations (Visit Finland, UNWTO etc.)
- Characteristics of tourism in different regions in Finland, services, actors, attractions etc.
- Subsectors in tourism (business travel, leisure tourism, incentive tourism, special interest tourism etc.)
- Profitable tourism product

Materials

Literature is based on academic journals, such as Annals of Tourism Research, International Journal of Hospitality Management, Tourism Management, International Journal of Contemporary Hospitality Management and e.g. publications and research documents from Visit Finland.

Teaching methods

Student workload

One credit equals approximately 26.7 hours of work performed by the student.

Course consist of:
- weekly lectures (7x2,5hrs)
- Pre-assignment (individual)
- Course assignment (report incl. travel itinerary + presentation in small groups)
- Self and peer evaluation

Content scheduling

The implementation schedule is visible to students in Pakki as implementation reservations.

There is a compulsory pre-assignment. Canvas course platform will be open two weeks before the first meeting. Course requires active attendance.

According to the degree regulations (section 18) “students must be present in the first contact session or notify their teacher in charge if they cannot attend. If they fail to notify the teacher of their absence in the first contact session, their enrollment will be rejected. Another student in the queue may be enrolled in the study unit in the place of the absent student.”
