Learning outcomes
The student is able to
- communicate as a professional in field-specific tasks and intercultural contexts
- produce effective spoken and written texts using an appropriate style and register
- demonstrate knowledge of essential terminology needed in working life
- apply principles of interpersonal and organizational communication
Teaching methods
The study unit will contain work on the following themes:
- Intercultural communication and communication style
- Communication strategies in spoken and written communication
- Building rapport in interpersonal communication
- Communicating effectively and persuasively in presentations, meetings and negotiations
- The use of style and register in spoken and written texts
- Review of common business terms

Development of intercultural competences is integrated into the study unit.

Further information for students
Students need to have passed the initial language proficiency test prior to taking this study unit. If students do not pass the language proficiency test they need to complete R0170 Valmentava englanti as well.

Evaluation methods and criteria
The final grade is based on the following:
- Vocabulary test 20%, 1 ECTS
- Spoken communication 40%, 2 ECTS
- Written communication 40%, 2 ECTS
All parts must be passed in order to complete the study unit.

Evaluation criteria, fail (0)
Students do not demonstrate adequate proficiency in producing spoken and written professional communications.
Evaluation criteria, satisfactory (1-2)
Students should be able to demonstrate proficiency in producing spoken and written professional communications equivalent to at least level B1 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
Evaluation criteria, good (3-4)
Students should be able to demonstrate proficiency in producing spoken and written professional communications equivalent to at least level B2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
Evaluation criteria, excellent (5)
Students should be able to demonstrate proficiency in producing spoken and written professional communications equivalent to at least level C1 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
