Teaching methods

Self-paced online course. The course is completed entirely independently by the end of the course deadline. You will study the material in an online learning environment, which includes study materials and assignments/tests. No personal feedback will be provided on the assignments.

Content and scheduling

Upon completing this course, you will be able to:

- Utilize and apply common digital tools used in the workplace effectively.
- Communicate appropriately and purposefully in workplace communication and interaction scenarios.
- Critically assess information and describe the basic principles of information security and data protection.

The course consists of five modules: Information Technology, Communication, Information Retrieval, Image and Video, and Security. The course includes online materials, exercises, and assignments.

Further information for students

We recommend that you complete the Digital Skills Test for Working Life before registering: https://form.typeform.com/to/IRdUjTvS. The test is in Finnish. Based on the test, you will receive a result that will help you assess the suitability of the course for yourself.

The course is Bachelor's degree program level. Master's students may also take the course or join to familiarize themselves with the content, but the course cannot be included in a Master's degree.

Laurea degree students and pathway students enroll in the course through Pakki. Enrollments are processed almost daily, allowing you to start the course flexibly when it suits you. You will receive a completion record for the course approximately two weeks after finishing. During holiday periods, enrollments and completion records are processed less frequently.

If the course is not completed by the end date of the implementation, the student can enroll in the next implementation. Incomplete assignments cannot be transferred to the next implementation; all tasks must be redone.

The course is implemented in the Canvas learning environment. You can complete this study flexibly at your own pace. The course has a recommended schedule, but deviating from it does not affect the course evaluation, as long as the course is completed by its last day (31.12.2024).

Registration is open continuously and new registrations are accepted approximately once a week (less often during holiday times).

Completion of the course requires that the participant has a computer and internet connection available.

Important dates

You have the opportunity to complete the study at your own pace between 01.06.2024 and 31.12.2024. All assignments of the study must be completed and a credits request must be requested with a separate assignment by the end of the study. The performance mark is entered into Laurea’s register about two weeks after submitting the performance mark request task.

During the summer holiday in July and during the New Year holidays, no evaluations are recorded. Performances completed by the end of the semester are recorded for the past semester, performances completed by 31.12. for the autumn semester and performances completed by 31.7. for the spring semester.
