Learning outcomes

The students will be able to
analyse the basis of decision-making in daily care
use methods of clinical examination and care need assessment of the patient to identify pathological changes in vital functions as early as possible
propose solutions to help acutely ill mental health or substance abuse clients as a member of a multidisciplinary team
plan, implement and evaluate nursing care when clients’ vital functions are threatened
plan, implement and evaluate nursing care of surgery patients
build a care relationship with clients who need psychological support and/or suffer from a mental health disorder and their significant others
build a care relationship with substance abuse clients and significant others
justify the pharmacotherapy used by the main client groups and evaluate their effectiveness
administer intravenous medication and infusions safely

Content

Professional Development in Practice III has the following parts:
Part 1. Workshops and simulations 3 cr
- ALS -workshop
- Perioperative and surgical nursing workshop
- infusions and transfusions workshop
- simulations
Part 2. Professional Development in Practice 12 credits.

Qualifications

Professional development in practice I and Professional Development in pactice II should be done prior to this 3rd practice.

Medication calculations in study course V1609 should be passed prior to this 3rd practice.

COMPULSORY ATTENDANCE TO ALL WORKSHOPS AND SIMULATIONS

Group is divided to 4 small groups: A, B, C, D
Workshops:

- Surgical workshop / Ilari
- Intraoperative workshop / Tiina
- Infusion and transfusion / Riikka
Simulations /Riikka & Tiina

Learning materials and recommended literature

Theory for these workshops and simulations is taught in V1609.
V1609 study material is used for this.

Co-operation with working life and/or RDI

Professional development in practice III 12 cr is done in authentic nursing care environment in co-operation with hospitals.

Participate to V1609 orientation lecture - you will get your group code there.

Forms of internationality

Nursing exchange students can participate all workshops and simulations if they also participate to the V1609. Unfortunately they cannot participate to clinical practice in hospitals.

Please note: Student must come on time to workshops and simulations. Late comers will not be allowed to lessons. Please contact the teacher, if there is any questions.

All workshops and simulations are evaluated as Pass / Fail.
Clinical practice is evaluated as Pass / Fail.

Teaching methods

This study unit includes the following parts:
Part 1. ALS-workshop 0,5cr
Part 2. Periop. and surgical care workshops 1,5cr
Part 3. Simulation workshop 1cr
Part 4. Professional Development in Practice III 12 cr
The workshops are compulsory, and students should do their best to participate to them with their study groups. The workshops are conducted during the spring 2021.
The part 4. is done in clinical practice in a hospital or in a clinic. Student should look for the clinical practice placement in Jobiili and book a suitable practice placement for spring-autumn 2021.

Location and time

Workshops are conducted during the autumn 2020. The dates and times will be available in Peppi.
