Learning outcomes

The student is able to
- plan, implement and evaluate a Service Design project with service design methods
- develop sustainable practices in organisations

Location and time

- Kickoff (Pre-Brief) Mon 22.8. 15.-16.00.
- Weekly Guidance with teacher Mon 9-10.30.
The teacher will send an email invitation to the Kickoff (pre-brief) to all enrolled students!

Materials

- We will study the Basics of Service Design using the Laurea Canvas Digital Platform (3 points). It replaces the 1st Theory Basis in this course.
- The source materials needed for the subject area of the project are selected separately after the project assignment.

Teaching methods

In this project we will work with Human robots, mainly with Pepper the Human Robot. Our aim is to test and to develop ways to use Robots in daily life.
We test using robots in tasks that are closely related to contact with humans in daily life e.g. Gymnastics, Vintage music, Reading daily news.

We learn the latest and best practice Customer Oriented methods (e.g. benchmark, customer persona, customer journey, future skenarios, ideating, value proposition, consumer behavior...).

Competences and skills: SERVICE DESIGN, CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE, CO-CREATION, ROBOTICS, INTERNATIONAL CO-OPERATING, OBSERVING, CONCEPT TESTING

We will e.g.
- Analyse the potential of a Robot with Use Case Seniorhome environment
- Use Research methods: Observation/interviews/survey
- Analyse collected and existing data
- Organise testings
- Use ready content and design new content based on analysis
- Program content to Pepper the Robot
- Evaluate critical things and success factors
- Make a video report of our findings
- Learn critical thinking

We learn how to do a project with Service Design process and tools. We replace one Theory Basis with Service Design Course in Laurea Canvas Digital platform and write only one Theory Basis on this course.

We will also learn how to work in a multi-cultural teams and increase your understanding of different cultural and communicational aspects (Asia, Europe, other?).

The project is completed in cooperation with a working life partner. Working life partners are
- Pepper the Human Robot https://bit.ly/3P6nKjB
- Lauttasaari seniorhome in Helsinki https://www.lauttasaarensenioritalo.fi/
- Robota project https://www.xamk.fi/en/frontpage/ and https://www.xamk.fi/tutkimus-ja-kehitys/robota/

The enrolled students will develop their competencies related to the Design Challenge in question during this project implementation.
Guidance and working sessions can be viewed in Timetable Engine. Communication practices are agreed on a project-specific basis.

Laurea reserves the right to make changes.
Quality of implementation has been evaluated and self-evaluation report is available.

Exam schedules

Important dates!
- Kickoff (Pre-Brief) Mon 22.8. 15.-16.00.
- Weekly Guidance with teacher Mon 9-10.30.

According to the degree regulations (section 18) "students must be present for the first contact teaching session, or they must notify the responsible teacher of their absence to confirm they intend to participate in studies. Registration for the study unit will be rejected, if the student does not notify the teacher of being absent from the first contact teaching session or the reason for their absence cannot be considered justified." The first contact session in a project means the first meeting between the project team and the supervisor (pre-brief).

It is compulsory to participate in the project kickoff meeting so that everyone participating in the project will receive the information on the project task.

Project guidance is offered on a weekly basis. The student can compare the available guidance sessions in Timetable Engine and select those projects/studies that do not overlap.

International connections

The project is suitable for exchange students.

Completion alternatives

All students are entitled to demonstrate their competence. The recognition and accreditation of prior competence is initiated by the students themselves. The competence is recognized and accredited by the teacher responsible for the studies or another person designated to the position. The assessment is carried out according to the same assessment criteria and, as a rule, same grading scale as that adopted for the corresponding study unit or module. The student is entitled to apply for accreditation of prior competence regardless of where, how and when the competence has been acquired. The student may also seek accreditation of competence to be acquired on the job as part of their degree (work-based learning). The student is responsible for demonstrating and verifying their competence and for providing sufficient information.

Student workload

The student spends approximately 16 hours of weekly working time on the project; in other words, approximately 8 hrs for team work and approximately 8 hrs for independent work per week.

Content scheduling

After completing this Service Design-project, the Student will be able to:
- Describe how value is created for the customers through service
- Recognize the essence of Service Design thinking and methods,
plan, implement and evaluate a service design project using ServiceDdesign methods
- Apply creative problem-solving and develop working methods individually and in team
- Foster entrepreneurship through service design

In this project Learning by Doing is achieved using several methods simultaneously:
- Service Design-course in Laurea Digital learning platform during the 1st weeks of the Project
- Project work in given Design Challenge during the whole project
- One Theory Basis upon a project related topic
- Coaching by Teacher during the whole project

Further information

The study unit corresponds to the requirements of Bachelor's level education.

This study implementation is a P2P project meaning that the project is completed in a small group and guided by a teacher. Participating in the project requires attendance in the project guidance meetings and group meetings.
