Learning outcomes

The student is able to:
- describe Internal Security in an open society
- analyze the Internal Security environment
- analyze issues affecting (strengthening or weakening) Internal Security in an open Society
- identify the main governmental organisations, their roles and responsibilities in Internal Security
- describe the national management structure in issues concerning societies internal security
- analyze the cooperation between different organisations and societal sectors in Internal Security
- refer to the main national legislation and documentation concerning Internal Security
- refer to the main EU-level documentation affecting the national internal security
- apply the key elements of domestic security and local security planning

Location and time

Start of the course is 12.9.2018 at 12.30 in Leppävaara. Attendance is mandatory for students in order to confirm their enrollment for the course. Attendance is also mandatory in case of expert lecture and student presentations if there are any. The course will have some contact days but a major part of the course is planned to be on-line. Optima workspace will be the main workingspace of the course. A detailed program will be introduced in the beginning of the course. Changes into the program are possible before and during the course. Students are informed about all changes beforehand.

Teaching methods

Before enrolling to this study unit, you should have adequate competence level of security management, which you can acquire for example by completing study unit: A9484 Basics of Corporate Security and Risk Management 10 credits.

Having completed the study unit the student is able to:
•describe Internal Security in an open society
•analyze the Internal Security environment
•analyze issues affecting (strengthening or weakening) Internal Security in an open Society
•identifythe main governmental organisations, their roles and responsibilities in Internal Security

•refert tothe main EU-level documentation affecting the national internal security
•applythe key elements of domestic security and local security planning
Contents: Definitions, Risk and threats analysis. Internal security vs. external security, Internal security strategy and program in Finland.
Security strategy for security of the society in Finland, Comprehensive security, EU agenda on internal secuirty, Roles and tasks of the main internal security organisations, Roles of 3rd and 4th sector in supporting the society's internal security.

Further information

Tutoring:
Tutoring is available on contact days and upon request. Discussion times should be pre-agreed with teacher.
The lectures will schedule some fixed tutoring dates and times into the course schedule.
Communication:
Optima is used for formal information and material sharing.
Other means of communication will be agreed by the learning community commonly in the beginning of the study unit.
