Esitietovaatimukset
This is applicable for Nursing studies staring autumn 2021 onwardes. The student needs to pass the test prior to clinical practice 3.
Tavoitteet
The aim of the test is to ensure the nursing student’s adequate professional language skills of Finnish in more demanding clinical practice.
Toteutustapa
The test will be implemented on the campus. It consist of a written and an oral part.

The Mid-studies test of Finnish is a milestone in your studies: when you proceed to more demanding clinical working environments, your communication skills in Finnish will be an essential asset. In order to sustain patient safety, it is crucial that you understand instructions and you are able to report you actions to the patients and your co-workers. Adequate skills of Finnish will also help you gain positive learning experience of your clinical practice.

Reading skills:
Understands main ideas in short texts and simple care guidelines; may miss some details.
Can locate specific information (e.g., reference range, point of a checklist) in structured texts.
Understands short paragraphs and simple instructions; may struggle with complex syntax.
Can make simple inferences (e.g., patient needs regular monitoring based on a checklist).
Oral skills:
Uses a range of nursing terminology (e.g., treatment procedures, patient instructions) quite accurately and appropriately. Occasional errors but meaning clear.
Uses basic structures correctly (present, past, location, ownership); attempts complex sentences with some errors. Errors do not impede communication.
Can maintain short exchanges on familiar topics; some hesitation but generally understandable. Can explain some simple procedures.

All the degree programme in nursing students whose mother tongue or language of prior education is not Finnish, are required to take the test in Finnish competence.

The first part of the test is a reading comprehension. In this part, there will be four short texts of the same healthcare-related topic, and the student will need to show understanding of the main ideas and the most important details of these texts. The student needs to gain 60% of the points in this part of the test.
The second part of the test is about oral interaction. The student will show their competence in planning the treatment of a case patient. There will be 15 minutes to get acquainted with the case and some preparatory guidelines before you discuss a care plan with the Finnish language assessor.
The oral test is graded as pass/fail. In order to pass, the student needs to show skills in core nursing vocabulary, using basic grammatical structures and in explaining and justifying their nursing plan.
In order to pass the test, the student needs to pass both parts of the test. In case of a fail, the student can have 2 retakes of both parts or only the one that's failed.

Struggles in identifying the topic and very basic information in short, simple texts (e.g., patient instructions).
Only recognizes familiar words and phrases; struggles with specific details unless highlighted.
Limited ability to infer meaning; relies on literal understanding.
Oral skills:
Only uses everyday vocabulary and very basic nursing terms (e.g., body parts). As a whole, the range of vocabulary is very limited; frequent reliance on gestures, L1 or the assessor.
Only produces short, simple sentences; frequent errors in basic grammatical structures.
Difficulties in responding to simple questions; needs repetition and support; pauses often.
Difficulties in giving very basic instructions.
