Tavoitteet

The student is able to
- define the meaning of evidence-based information and how it is produced, summarised and distributed
- describe the nurse's/public health nurse's role in evidence-based care and commit to implementing it
- describe the significance of different types of information in client contacts and evidence-based nursing in health care services
- search for information in the most common nursing and other health science databases
- critically assess and apply national and international research data
- describe the basic Information related to copyright and mark reference sources
- apply the basics of reporting and scientific writing
- present information in different ways, taking the target group and its needs into account
- acquire basic presentation skills and use them in practise
- display a positive attitude towards research and evidence-based nursing
- discuss the significance of human rights, values of nursing, ethical principles and instructions in nursing and their own work
- recognise the existence of ethical conflicts and propose justified solutions to them

Toteutustapa

Daytime learning:

A Canvas learning environment is used to support the implementation of the course, and some of the course assignments are completed and returned by a given deadline on the course learning environment. It is important to take part in teaching and guidance on campus according to schedule, and the course includes compulsory attendance on all workshops and on some teaching on campus. The teaching with mandatory attendance is clearly stated on the course timetable and course syllabus.
The study unit includes working in pairs or groups. You will receive individual feedback for assignments from the teacher, and working life or peer feedback may also be utilised.

The course includes:
1. Face-to-face teaching either on campus or in real time on Zoom/Teams. The schedule and location can be found in the course schedule.
2. Student group work in face-to-face teaching on campus
3. Independent studying
4. Assessable assignment returns on the Canvas learning platform, and in face-to-face teaching

The face-to-face teaching on campus is defined as mandatory for students for the following reasons:
• the face-to-face teaching integrates the practice of Finnish vocabulary and expressions of the subject matter in pair and small group work
• the ethics workshop included in the course is mandatory for students
• the seminar at the end of the course includes small group presentations and is therefore mandatory for everyone

Toteutuksen valinnaiset suoritustavat

According to the degree regulations (2024), Students are entitled to apply for recognition of prior learning regardless of where, when and how the competence has been acquired. ... At Laurea, there are two different procedures for the recognition and accreditation of prior learning: a) accreditation of prior learning (competence acquired in higher education studies at another institution) and b) demonstration of competence (competence acquired in other ways). The recognition and accreditation of prior learning is initiated by the student themselves. The student is responsible for demonstrating and verifying their competence. The student is entitled to guidance for the recognition and accreditation of their competence. Further information in the student intranet.

You may also assess work-based learning as a way to acquire the competence needed. Read more in the student intranet.

Based on the degree regulations (2024), the student accepted for the implementation is required to confirm their participation by showing activity at the start of the study in the following way:

In order to demonstrate activity, the student must be present at the first contact lesson or notify the teacher in charge of their absence to confirm their participation in the study. Registration will be rejected if the student does not report their absence at the start of the study or the reason for the absence cannot be considered justified. Another student can be taken in their place. The first contact lesson is 6.11.2025.

Workload of the study is measured in a way that to acquire the goal competence of the study, one credit corresponds to an average of 26.7 hours of work done by the student. The actual time needed varies e.g. according to prior competence.

The course includes the following:

1. Evidence-based nursing (1 ECTS)/ teacher Terhi Hautaviita
The student is able to:
- define the meaning of evidence-based information and how it is produced, summarised and distributed

2. Basics of philosophy and ethics in nursing (1 ECTS)/ teacher Terhi Hautaviita
The student is able to:
- discuss the significance of human rights, values of nursing, ethical principles and instructions in nursing and their own work
- recognise the existence of ethical conflicts and propose justified solutions to them

3.Oral and written communication (1 ECTS)/ teacher Anja Mertanen
The student is able to:
- describe the basic Information related to copyright and mark reference sources
- apply the basics of reporting and scientific writing
- present information in different ways, taking the target group and its needs into account
- acquire basic presentation skills and use them in practise
- display a positive attitude towards research and evidence-based nursing

Lisätiedot

The study unit corresponds to the requirements of Bachelor's level education. The quality of the study unit implementation has been assessed and the self-evaluation report is available for example in Canvas or Teams.

The course includes an ethics workshop for groups A and B. These groups A and B are formed at the beginning of the studies. You can participate only in the workshop that corresponds to your own group.

Use of artificial intelligence to support the development of your own competence: The use of artificial intelligence in the assessed assignments of this course is prohibited (see the section Assessment methods and assessment criteria). We may utilize the opportunities offered by artificial intelligence in face-to-face teaching.

However, it is recommended that the student during their studies will familiarize her-/himself with and utilizes the artificial intelligence tools offered by Laurea to develop artificial intelligence literacy, and both the assessment and utilization of information produced by artificial intelligence. The purpose is therefore to learn about the various possibilities of utilizing artificial intelligence and about the limitations related to its’ utilization. In this way the responsibilities and obligations will become familiar already at the beginning of the studies. Arviointimenetelmät ja arvioinnin perusteet

"Competence assessment is based on the descriptions of objectives in the curricula, and the level of competence is assessed according to the assessment criteria listed in the implementation plan for the studies" (Laurea degree regulations 2024).

The course is assessed numerically on the assessment scale T1 - K5, and there are other assessed coursework on the course on scale: pass – fail. Use of artificial intelligence to support the development of your own competence: The use of artificial intelligence in the assessed assignments of this course is prohibited. If student is found to have used artificial intelligence in any form on an assessed assignments, the coursework in question is assessed as fail.

There are six (6) assessed assignments on this course, and they are the following:

Coursework assessed T1 – K5:
- An essay examining nursing ethics. The assessment scale for the essay is visible on Canvas. If the essay is not returned according to the announced schedule (the essay submission DL is visible on Canvas), -10% will be deducted from the final score of the essay.


Coursework assessed Pass – Fail:
- Nursing ethics workshop: For a student to receive a Pass, attendance is mandatory, and it is required to actively participate in the workshop. (Note: You can only participate in the workshop that corresponds to your own group) /responsible teacher Terhi Hautaviita
- Sources and references test/responsible teacher /responsible teacherX

In this study unit the assessing of the competences will be done by using the criteria set for requirement level I.

Professional knowledge basis, information searching and reporting

To achieve grade 5 student must be able to
- use professional concepts extensively

- use professional concepts in a consistent manner when explaining various work practices and situations

Professional practice and workplace development

To achieve grade 5 student must be able to
- work independently, using the skills and methods learned

To achieve grade 3 student must be able to
- engage in goal-oriented work in a team
- plan and manage the progress of their work and use of time

- justify their actions in accordance with the professional code of conduct

- work as a member of a team
- plan the progress of their work and use of time under guidance
- work safely and in accordance with the professional code of conduct
- follow the provided instructions and rules

“Students who have failed to demonstrate their competence in accordance with the approved level must supplement or retake their study attainment in a manner and schedule defined by the teacher of the study unit. If the student does not pass the assessment despite the opportunity to complete their study attainment, they must complete the study unit in question in full as specified by the teacher.” (Degree regulations 2024.)

The schedules and other conditions for the retakes of the assessed assignments are the following:
1. Essay on nursing ethics: note that a late essay will be classed as a fail, and resubmitting is classed as a retake. Furthermore, -10% will be deducted from the final score of the essay. Resubmission date for the essay is announced on the first meeting on 6.11.2025.
2. Evidence-based nursing poster-presentation: as this is a small group work, a retake is an individual written assignment and a video presentation on a topic assigned by the responsible teacher. The retake deadline is 15.12.2025, and it will be assessed according to the Degree Regulations 2024.
3. Nursing ethics workshop: student must attend workshop on the next term with Finnish students.

All staff and students of Laurea are expected to adhere to good scientific practices, which includes appropriate referencing. Familiarise yourself with the practices and, if needed, ask for more information. All study assignments are to be done as individual work unless otherwise instructed. If Tournitin is used when assignments are checked, the lecturer will inform the students of this.
