Materials
The course material will be provided in Canvas by the teacher. The students will be mainly working on authentic materials used by professionals of nursing.
Teaching methods
NB! THE COURSE IS AIMED AT DEGREE STUDENTS OF NURSING!
The course consists of contact lessons as well as independent studies, pair and group tasks mainly implemented in Canvas.
To assure the possibilities of meeting the course objectives mandatory attedance on contact lessons 80%.
Starting level B1.2. The course aims at level B2.1.
Main topics of the course are:
- Understanding a lengthy narrative and being able to summarize it.
- Observing the differences and understanding variations of spoken Finnish.
- Guidance of a patient or a client. Tools for active listening and polite directions.
- Coping in the phone using ISBAR technique.
- Exploring professional articles and share the information with others.
- Discussing ethical issues in nursing and in social services.
- Reporting a safety incident
- Describing feelings and emotions and the support that the person might be able to get.
International connections
The course is aimed at students with other than Finnish previous education. This will bring topics of cultural sensitivity and multicultural team work as a part of the contents.
Student workload
Contact lessons approx. 40 hours. Independent studies and assignments approx. 95 hours.

NB! The course in aimed at students of Nursing Programme and its' contents is structured accordingly. For Nursing Degree students that do not study Swedish this course is mandatory with some exceptions. Please consult the course teacher if you have questions regarding this.
