Teaching methods

This is a fully automated implementation that will be carried out independently from 15.01.2024 to 31.05.2024. Self-direction is required. The study unit does not include meetings or working in pairs or groups. You will study in a Canvas learning environment which includes learning material and assingments/tests. You will not receive individual feedback for assignments: feedback is based on checking the accuracy of the exams after the they have been returned.

Location and time

[This field is not used at Laurea.]

Learning materials and recommended literature

All material needed for studying is in the Canvas workspace or linked there.

Alternative completion methods of implementation

All students are entitled to demonstrate their competence. The recognition and accreditation of prior competence is initiated by the students themselves. The competence is recognised and accredited by the teacher responsible for the studies or another person designated to the position. The assessment is carried out according to the same assessment criteria and, as a rule, same grading scale as that adopted for the corresponding study unit or module. The student is entitled to apply for accreditation of prior competence regardless of where, how and when the competence has been acquired. The student may also seek accreditation of competence to be acquired on the job as part of their degree (work-based learning). The student is responsible for demonstrating and verifying their competence and for providing sufficient information.

Demonstration of competence for the entire study period is carried out through Tradenomikoulutus - Demonstrations of skills - Canvas. Using the basis found in the workspace, the student prepares a competency analysis and returns it to the course folder. Competence analyzes are processed once a month. If the previous competence covers part of the competence goals of the study course, the student must contact the teacher of the study course.

Important dates

The course is completed according to the student's own schedule between 15.01.2024 and 31.05.2024. The course must be completed and the final assignment returned by May 31. by 23:59 to pass the course. Exceptionally, you do not need to confirm your place in the course. However, if you are not going to complete the study, inform the teacher in charge.

Forms of internationality

The study unit is suitable for exchange students.

Students workload

The study course contains 135 hours of work done by the student, which means an average of about 8 hours/week divided over the entire duration of the study course. Pay special attention to the scheduling of this course in your calendar, because the tasks do not have separate deadlines, but the student is independently responsible for the timing that suits their calendar.

Content and scheduling

The course consists of an orientation and five modules on different subject areas. Modules 1-4 consist of an online lecture, review questions, an assignment and a midterm exam. In the last module, a final task that brings together the subject areas is prepared.

Each module has tasks and at the end there is a short exam, which, if passed, allows you to move on to the next module. At the end of the course, there is still a final assignment that gathers all subject areas.

The course modules are
- Key regulation
- Environmental management and risk management
- Sustainable development
- Chemical safety and emissions

Evaluation methods and criteria

“The evaluation of competence is based on the descriptions of objectives in the curricula, and the level of competence is assessed according to the evaluation criteria listed in the implementation plan for the studies.” (Laurea degree regulations).

The grade for the course is formed based on intermediate exams. The course also includes other tasks that do not affect the grade, but they must be completed in order to progress in the course.

Each intermediate exam is evaluated according to the evaluation table below, i.e. to pass the exam, you must get at least 40% of the answers correct. In the overall grade, the intermediate exams are taken into account with equal weights.

Grading scale
5 < 94% - 90%
4 < 90% - 75%
3 < 75% - 60%
2 < 60% - 50%
1 < 50% - 40%
0 < 40% - 0%

In this study unit the assessing of the competences will be done by using the criteria set for requirement level II.
