The course material will be provided in Canvas by the teacher. The students will be mainly working on authentic materials used by professionals of nursing and social services.
NB! THE COURSE IS AIMED AT DEGREE STUDENTS OF NURSING AND SOCIAL SERVICES!
The course consists of contact lessons as well as independent studies, pair and group tasks mainly implemented in Optima.
To assure the possibilities of meeting the course objectives mandatory attedance on contact lessons 80%.
Starting level B1.2. The course aims at level B2.1.
Main topics of the course are:
- Mitä on tapahtunut? Understanding a lengthy narrative and being able to summarize it.
- Anteeksi kuinka? Observing the differences and understanding variations of spoken Finnish.
- Sun kannattaa varmaan... Guidance of a patient or a client. Tools for active listening and polite directions.
- Tässä on sairaanhoitaja Xiu osasto neloselta. Coping in the phone using ISBAR technique.
- Tyttöjen tupakointi nousussa. Interpreting and referring to statistics.
- Se on tutkittua tietoa. Exploring professional articles and share the information with others.
- Onko se oikein? Discussing ethical issues in nursing and in social services.
- Voi ei! Reporting a safety incident
- Kuka lohduttaisi? Describing feelings and emotions and the support that the person might be able to get.
The assessment will be based on several assignments that the student works on along the course. This will provide the student with various ways of presenting one's oral and written skills. The evaluation criteria is as described in CEFR B2 https://europass.cedefop.europa.eu/resources/european-language-levels-cefr.

NB! The course in aimed at students of Nursing and Social Services Programmes and its' contents is structured accordingly. For Nursing Degree students that do not study Swedish this course is mandatory with some exceptions. Please consult the course teacher if you have questions regarding this.

The course is aimed at students with other than Finnish previous education. This will bring topics of cultural sensitivity and multicultural team work as a part of the contents.
Online lessons approx. 40 hours. Independent studies and assignments approx. 95 hours.

Oral skills: The student can understand the main points of clear standard speech on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, leisure, etc. The student is able to connect phrases in a simple way in order to describe experiences and events, my dreams in professional life. The student can briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans. The student can narrate a real life story and describe one's reactions. The student sometimes needs help and support to convey one's message. The student can deal with familiar situations likely to arise whilst working in one's professional field. The student is able to enter into conversation on topics that are personal interest or pertinent to everyday working life. Written skills: The student can understand texts that consist mainly of high frequency everyday or job-related language. The student can understand the description of events in professional documents. The student can write simple connected text on topics which are most frequent in professional context. The student can write a logical narrative.
Oral skills: The student can present clear, detailed descriptions on a wide range of subjects related to nursing or social services. The student can explain a viewpoint on a professional issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options. The student can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible. The student is able to adjust one's speech in regard to the recipient (e.g. colleagues, clients or patients). The student can take an active part in discussion in professional contexts, accounting for and sustaining one's views. Written skills: The student can read articles and reports concerning professional topics. The student can write clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects related to one's professional interests. The student can write a report, passing on information or giving reasons in support of or against a particular point of view.
Oral skills: The student can present clear, detailed descriptions on a wide range of complex subjects related to nursing or social services. The student can explain a viewpoint on a professional issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options and round off with conclusions. The student can interact with fluency and spontaneity without much obvious searching for expressions. The student can use language flexibly and effectively for social and professional purposes The student can take an active part in discussion in professional contexts, accounting for and sustaining one's views. Written skills: The student can read articles and reports concerning professional topics. The student can write clear, well-structured detailed text on a wide range of subjects related to one's professional interests. The student can write a report, passing on information or giving reasons in support of or against a particular point of view. The student is able to select a style appropriate to the reader in mind.
