Learning outcomes

The student is able to
- describe the operations and protocols in global IP networks
- calculate IP subnets and supernets
- describe security vulnerabilities in IP network infrastructure
- compare and contrast IPv6 to IPv4
- describe the functional concepts and security risks in wireless networking

Teaching methods

The study unit is based on weekly meetings and weekly work at virtual learning environment for a period of 6 weeks. At the end there is an exam. It is highly recommended that the student has finished either "R0242 Tietoverkot ja tietoturva" or "R0280 Data networks and security" (or "Tietoverkkoarkkitehtuuri/Network architecture" in the previous curriculum) to be able to work efficiently in this study unit. At the minimum, the student must have prior basic understanding of IP protocols and the structure and operation of internet.

Content and scheduling

The study unit is designed to go deeper into internet infrastructure security issues after the introductory study unit R0280. Working during the study unit is done both in groups (during the weeksly meetings) and individually (between the meetings on-line).

Further information for students

The first meeting is obligatory. The normal course requires attendance in at least 4/6 of the weekly meetings. Other opportunities may be discussed with lecturers.

Evaluation methods and criteria

The evaluation during this study unit is based on the assignments at learning environment, working during the classroom meetings and the final exam.

Evaluation criteria, satisfactory (1-2)

The student demonstrated adequate level of learning in the graded assignments and in the exam.

Evaluation criteria, good (3-4)

The student demonstrated good level of learning in the graded assignments and in the exam and participated actively during the class room work.

Evaluation criteria, excellent (5)

The student demonstrated excellent learning outcomes in assignments, the exam and class room work.
