Learning outcomes

The student is able to
- differentiate the app ecosystem and their pros and cons
- describe the key technologies to develop applications for the major mobile platforms
- identify and apply a systematic approach for mobile app design
- implement app ideas with design principles: user experience (UX), user-centered design and mobile constraints
- work in a team to generate mobile app wireframe and paper prototype
- configure and use a development environment for a chosen mobile platform
- develop a simple mobile application prototype

Teaching methods

The feature of the course:
o This study unit is FULLY ONLINE learning with the possibilities of volunteer tutoring meetings with the teachers.
o The tutoring meetings are not compulsory. Any student can participate in tutoring meeting if they need any help from teachers.
o The student can learn from anywhere on own time with weekly learning target (weekly modules) and deadlines.
Training materials:
o Video-based training. In addition, presentation slides provided, reading material and other resources are also provided. The step-by-step process of building mobile applications
o Finally, there are many courses on mobile application development, this course is one of very few that offers designing and development of mobile application development.

Learning materials and recommended literature

In this course, we are using following materials: (1) Video based tutorials (2) Teacher's own step-by-step guide (3) Laurea Library materials

The student will learn two most important aspects of Mobile Applications Development:
1) Mobile Applications Design: The structured approach and science of designing a mobile application.
2) Mobile Applications Development: Step-by-step demonstration and learning a simple and basic cross-platform mobile applications development with Ionic framework.

Alternative completion methods of implementation

There is a possibility of taking final hands-on practical test and project work to demonstrate learning outcomes. Contact teacher for more details.

Laurea announces certain possibilities along the study unit offering based on demand from our partner companies.

Students can collect points with weekly or biweekly learning activities, assignments and 2 tests.

Forms of internationality

Teachers and students group are international (Finnish and English degree programme students). We are also partnering with ICT companies for projects.

Students workload

Kindly notice following carefully before registering for the study unit. This is a technical and professional training study unit and it requires regular weekly learning effort.

NOTE: There can be minor scheduling changes.

Further information for students

Prerequisite of the course (VERY IMPORTANT):
o An understanding of Fundamentals of programming, HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript can greatly benefit your learning experience.
o We don’t recommend this course if someone lacking the know-how on programming principles, HTML and CSS.
o We have 30 seats available, we give priority to those students with the prerequisites.
Know-how of JavaScript is not the ultimate requirement.
NOTE: The student MUST finish their Fundamentals of programming and Web Development Foundation (or) Having equivalent knowledge to benefit from this study unit. In the past, there is not a single student passed this course without Prerequisite. The student cannot learn much if previous know-how is missing.

Evaluation methods and criteria

The student can collect points with online learning, online assignments and 1 online test and 1 classroom test. Following are evaluation components (more details in next tabs):
o Online Labwork and Assignments (40%) - Weekly or biweekly
o Online Hands-on practical test-1(30%): Student designing a mobile app
o Online Hands-on practical test-2(30%): Student developing a mobile app
o Final retake/retest also offered at Laurea premise (classroom hands-on test at the end of a semester)
