Learning outcomes

The student is able to:

• apply the skill of vicarious thinking in everyday negotiations and decision making
• understand the marginal cost zero characteristic of data based goods (non-rivalry goods) and be able to create related new business models embracing this characteristic
• able to measure the position in a network and understand the value of different positions in a net-work
• understand value creation in network environments
• analyze the competitive strengths of companies working in a digital environment providing digital services

Teaching methods

The course consists of 8 chapters. Each chapter contains a quiz. These quizzes have to be completed successfully to obtain a grade one. To achieve grade two, students need to be active on the discussion forums. Grade three requires reading and reviewing a related academic article (1-2 pages). To achieve a grade four to five, students will also need to return an essay.

Location and time

The course has an example timetable to act as a guideline. The student can conduct the course at his own pace e.g. a faster pace or e.g. start later. The students who have registered need to visit the platform as soon as possible to ensure that access to the platform was fluent and successful. No late submissions are accepted. Students may enroll on to a future course and will need to resubmit earlier assignments (i.e. take copy of answers and essays to next implementation)

This course will start on 1.9 and will end 15.12.

The course will be implemented on the new online learning platform called canvas and used at Laurea.

A student who is new to Laurea will receive a laurea email and instructions how to board the canvas platform.

Forms of internationality

The course instructor is seeking for opportunities to teach the course in a classroom setting in campuses around the world.
The course has been taught in a classroom setting for example in New Delhi India at IILM in November 2017 (https://www.iilm.edu/) at the WSG University of Economy in Poland in 2012-2015 (http://www.cwz.wsg.byd.pl/en/homepage.1.html) . In spring 2020 the course was due to be taught in Chile, but the covid-19 pandemia cancelled plans.

In 2020 the course will be taught and available in co-operation with campusonline.fi to students in all the universities of applied sciences in Finland. The course is promoted at different international venues and interested parties are encouraged to enroll and familiarize themselves with the content.

Students workload

The course has been designed to be time and place independent.
Within the start and end times, the student can choose when to start and when to finish and when to study. Please make a plan to ensure that you allocate enough time for your studies.

Content and scheduling

I have uploaded the content of the course on to my web page villesaarikoski.com. Note that the actual course will be conducted on the online learning platform canvas and will contain additional elements (quizzes, places to return your assignments etc)
