Learning outcomes

The Student is able to
- describe how the vital functions of a patient in intensive care can be anticipated and assessed
- plan and select methods for the examination, observation and maintenance of the vital functions of a patient in intensive care in a patient-centred nursing and taking into account the needs of different patients and patient groups
- plan and apply the psychological support and guidance of patients in emergency care and their family in a patient-centred nursing
- describe the physical, psychological and social rehabilitation of a patient in intensive care and plan support for rehabilitation in a patient-centred nursing
- use different methods of documentation and reporting related to the care of a patient in intensive care
- describe the development needs for the care and service paths of a patient in intensive care and plan evidence-based nursing procedures to improve the quality, safety and cost-effectiveness of intensive patient care
- critically analyse and develop one's own competence in the care of a patient in intensive care
- describe ethical problems and act according to ethical principles in the intensive care environment

Teaching methods

Intensive care is the medical specialty that supports critically ill patients. Examples of the content of this study unit:
-ICU environment and its special features
-Patient and Family perspectives in crisis situation
-Planning, implementing and evaluating treatment for intensive care patients, as well as decision-making in nursing care

The course is implemented through contact lessons, simulations, reading material, tasks, gamification and seminar presentation.

Compulsory attendance: simulation (1 day/student), seminar presentations (1 day).
Compulsory attendance to 80 % of the theoretical lectures (at least 4/5 lectures).

It is strongly recommended that you plan your possible other studies, practice and work in such a way that you can participate in the lectures. Lectures will not be recorded.

Content and scheduling

Contact lessons and tasks related to lectures: 20 hours
Group work & Seminar presentation, peer assessment: 45 hours
Simulation: 8 hours
Reading course material and supplementary tasks: 62 hours

Compulsory attendance: simulation, seminar presentations, lectures (80%).

Further information for students

The studies are available for all nursing students and for open university students who have completed the Nursing Degree Program earlier.


Quote from the degree regulations section 18:

“Students must be present for the first contact teaching session, or they must notify the responsible teacher of their absence to confirm they intend to participate in studies. If the student has a justified reason for not attending the first contact teaching session or for not notifying the teacher of their intention to be involved in studies in the manner required by the teacher, the student must contact the responsible teacher to agree on participation in the studies. Their registration for the study unit will be rejected, of the student does not notify the teacher of being absent from the first contact teaching session or the reason for their absence cannot be considered justified, Another student who is in line for the study unit can be selected in their place”.

Evaluation methods and criteria

The course is evaluated numerically. The grade is determined on the basis of the seminar assignment, which will be graded with the numerical scale 1-5/Redo (see separate instructions). However, the summarative reflection task can raise your personal grade to +1 if it has been written thoroughly (see separate instructions).
