Teaching methods

The study unit is based on
- text and video material in Canvas
- quizzes and discussions of the topics addressed
- weekly non-mandatory online sessions in Zoom to reflect and share experiences
- some slightly larger assignments carried along the course to apply the knowledge acquired
- visiting experts
- optionally some other learning experiments like business simulations

Learning materials and recommended literature

The learning material is mainly videos from public sources like YouTube. There is a variety of topics and it is not possible to give a single textbook. Some references are given during the course.

Alternative completion methods of implementation

To recognize your prior learning you need to follow the genaral recognition process. Students with experience are, however, recommended not to try to recognize it to skip the course but join the course and share their experience with others. Some assignments can be waived for experienced students case by case.

Co-operation with working life and/or RDI

Industry experts are invited to talk about their field whenever available and suitable for the course content.
There may even be some short projects with partners depending on their availability but in general this course does not have major teamwork.

Important dates

The detailed course schedule will be published in Canvas some days prior to the start of the course. Participation in the opening session is highly recommended to get a better overview of the course and the assignments. However, it is not mandatory as typically in campus courses. The sessions are recorded when possible but for potential technical issues this cannot be guaranteed.

Forms of internationality

The course will be offered in English because most of the students are international.

Students workload

The course requires constant steady participation and progress to avoid overload at the end. Pass criteria is intentionally low but to get the most of the course content, interest in the topics and self-motivation to learn beyond the requirements is critical.

The course assessment is based on points acquired in the quizzes and assignments, and active participation, according to the schedule given in Canvas.

To pass this 10 cr course you need to pass the initial quiz and pass each of the main modules. Each module has a certain weight against the final grade. The module consists of theory (assessed by quizzes) and practise (other assignments including discussions).

Further information for students

According to the degree regulations (section 18) “students must be present in the first contact session or
notify their teacher in charge if they cannot attend. If they fail to notify the teacher of their absence in the
first contact session, their enrolment will be rejected. Another student in the queue may be enrolled in the
study unit in the place of the absent student.” (Laurea degree regulations) In the case of online studies
the lecturer can also specify some other way than participation on an online meeting what is required
from the student so that he/she verifies his/her attendance on the study unit (Decision by the vice

Students have the opportunity to participate in distance learning classes according to the schedule.

At the end of the course, there is an opportunity to increase the grade earned in class assignments by participating in a voluntary exam.

Class assignments must be completed during the course in order to pass the course. The student must progress in the tasks throughout the semester - the teacher is not responsible for the progress of the students' work. If the student does not ask for help and does not make sufficient progress, he will be given a failing grade.

Evaluation methods and criteria

The evaluation of competence is based on the goal descriptions in the curricula, and the level of competence is evaluated according to the evaluation criteria in the implementation plan of the studies. (Laurea degree rules).

The grade (0-5) is determined based on completed assignments and the exam (if the student participated: the exam is not mandatory).
A student can get a grade of 0-3 by completing assignments (40% - 60% - 80% of the points).
A student can get a 0-2 increase in his grade by participating in a voluntary exam (60% - 80% of the points).
An exam at the end of the course is NOT mandatory, but possible.

A grade of 0 (failed) for class assignments cannot be increased with an exam. In order to pass the course, the student must earn at least grade 1 by doing class assignments.

In this Study Course, the assessment of competence is carried out according to the criteria set for requirement level I.

Learning outcomes

At the beginning of their studies, all students who have English and/or Swedish qualifications on prior certificates required for studies at Laurea, or who have received previous instruction in English and/or Swedish take initial tests in these languages. The initial tests are the same for all fields of study and may only be taken once. Students who transfer between degrees within Laurea do not have to retake the test. The test is used to check the students’ starting level before language studies begin. Students who fail the test must take preparatory studies in the language at the start of their studies. Having passed the preparatory studies, students obtain credits for inclusion in elective studies.

Further information

At the beginning of their studies, all students who have Swedish qualifications on prior certificates required for studies at Laurea take initial test in Swedish, with the exception of those whose mother tongue or language of education is Swedish.

Alternative completion methods of implementation

According to Laurea UAS's degree regulations, "All students are entitled to demonstrate their competence. The recognition and accreditation of prior competence is initiated by the students themselves. The competence is recognised and accredited by the teacher responsible for the studies or another person designated to the position.

The assessment is carried out according to the same assessment criteria and, as a rule, the same grading scale as that adopted for the corresponding study unit or module.

The student is entitled to apply for accreditation of prior competence regardless of where, how and when the competence has been acquired. The student may also seek accreditation of competence to be acquired on the job as part of their degree (work-based learning). The competence to be accredited must be in line with the learning outcomes of the degree programme’s curriculum. Virtual studies with scheduled online meetings. Bi-weekly individual assignments.

Further information for students

Understanding customers can be challenging. Still it creates the basis for business development. To whom do you develop your service to? Who is your customer and who is the end user for the product or service? How are you able to find all necessary information and make different decisions based on it? How do you use this information in service design or development?
During this study unit we’ll go through different aspects of customer behavior. The focus and examples are from different digital services. In addition, you’ll get the possibility to analyze your own behavior as a customer.
The study unit grade is based on weekly assignments which need to be completed and returned before the deadlines.
