Osaamistavoitteet

The student is able to
- analyze the international security environment
- describe the major International actors and their roles in international Conflict Prevention
- describe the major Conflict prevention documents and mechanisms, e.g. in the European Union
- be aware of the concept of Comprehensive Crisis Management
- understand the context of Border Security as part of international and national security environment
- identify international movability and its origins
- analyze current and past International Crisis’s using the Conflict Cycle
- analyze the future trends in International Security

Toteutustapa

Virtual implementation. Before enrolling to this study unit, you should have adequate competence level of security management, which you can acquire for example by completing study unit: A9484 Basics of Corporate Security and Risk Management 10 credits.
The study unit requires that students create groups of 4-5 in order to accomplish the required assignments. The students are in charge for this team-building.
Following assignment tools for assessment are used:
- pre-readings and notes
- Optima- discussions in Teams
- literature analysis
- on-line exam
- media follow-up or case-report (TBC)
- peer-review

Aika ja paikka

This study unit is a virtual implementation. Start is early february (to be confirmed).
Start of the Study Unit is on wed 13.2 at 10.00hrs as a webinar. Attendance on this webinar-session (Contact Day) is mandatory. By being present at the first session the student is ensuring his/hers seat on the course. After the first contact day no new students are accepted on the course. A more detailed implementation plan with learning events/ on-line sessions will be published on the first Contact Day during the class and will be published also in Optima-workspace.
All lectures and session will be organised on-line using Zoom- application. Zoom- application is available for free on-line. Students are requested to download Zoom in advance in order to participate on designated sessions. The lectures will publish a Zoom-link in Optima to be used for the sessions.

After completing the course the student is able to:
- Analyze the international security environment and the phenomenon, trends and forces affecting international security,Interdependence of Internal and External Security
- Understand multilateral contractual cooperation and the role of international law (e.g. public and private international law)
- Understand the conflict life-cycle cycle and relevant key definitions and is aware of some conflict management tools
- Understand the concept of comprehensive crisis management
- Identify main international actors and their roles in conflict prevention
- Analyze international security in practice through case-study
This study unit has four modules with different themes and focus. Themes are:
1. Conflict prevention, Open society, Security environment (individual)
2. Main International organisations related to security (individual)
3. International cooperation, international law (individual)
4. Analyzing international security (team assignment)

Lisätietoja opiskelijoille

Tutoring:
Tutoring is available on beforehand set days and upon request. Personal discussion times should be pre-agreed with teacher.
Communication:
Teams- application will be used for tutoring and general information sharing. The lecturers will in advance create a Teams- group for this study unit and invite the students to join.
Optima is used for formal information,material sharing and storeing, returning assignments, etc.
If neccessary, other means of communication will be agreed by the learning community commonly in the beginning of the study unit.
Changes to preliminary program are possible, but the students will be notified if neccessary.

All excercises (graded and non-graded assignments) have to be accomplished in order to get credits and pass the course. Return of assignment: All assignmentsmust be submitted into Optima returnboxes.
