Learning outcomes

The students will be able to
analyse the basis of decision-making in a multidisciplinary team in clinical nursing
describe nurses’ responsibilities and obligations in assessing the need for and urgency of care
make decisions by using methods of clinical examination of the patient, care need assessment, digital decision aids and consultation
recognise changes that threat vital functions and plan, implement and evaluate clinical nursing procedures that support vital functions
explain the main illnesses and injuries in the field of surgery and the medical grounds for care
describe the different fields of anaesthesiology and the different anaesthesia forms
plan, carry out and evaluate perioperative nursing
justify the practices and medicines used advanced life support
plan, implement and evaluate administration of intravenous medication, infusions and nutrition

Teaching methods

Participation to contact lessons and lectures as well as compulsory workshops.
Also on-line studies are part of this study unit.

V1609 Decision-Making in Acute Nursing Care 10 credits study course has the following parts:
1. Acute Care Nursing theory (teacher Riikka Mulder)
1a Acute care nursing theory 2cr
1b Medication care and calculations 2 cr
2. Perioperative and surgical nursing 2.5 op (teacher Lotta Tiikkainen)
3. Infusion therapy & transfusions 1 op (teacher Lotta Tiikkainen)
4. Advanced Life Support (on-line) 0,5 cr (teacher Riikka Mulder)
5. Surgery and anesthesiology (on-line) 2 cr (teacher Reija Korhonen)

Evaluation methods and criteria

Parts 1 -3: theory lessons & exams that are evaluated T1 - K5, fail 0
Parts 4 & 5: on-line course work that is evaluated pass/ fail / re-do
There are also workshops and simulation workshops (3 credits) in these topic areas. The workshops / simulations are evaluated in a study course V1611 Professional Development in practice III.
