Learning outcomes

The students is able to
- interact in various social situations
- develop one’s Finnish skills utilizing the Finnish speaking society and environment
- reflect on Finnish lifestyle, policies and services of everyday life
- use the most frequent grammar structures to convey one’s message
- reach the target level A2.1-A2.2 in CEFR

Teaching methods

The course consists of contact lessons at Otaniemi campus as well as independend and group assignments in Canvas learning platform.

Learning materials and recommended literature

Study book Kuparinen - Tapaninen Oma suomi 1 (printed or an e-book) & audio app + materials in Canvas provided by the teacher and the students.

Forms of internationality

The course is aimed at foreign students studying and working in Finnish environment that brings out multiple cultural dimensions.

Students workload

5 credit points equal 135 hours of student's work.This includes approx 50 hours of contact lessons + 85 hours of student's independent work.

Content and scheduling

In the beginning of the course, the students can have their say on the topics that we will focus on. Possible topics are e.g.
- doing grocery shopping
- how to deal with sudden illness + how to talk of body parts
- how to commute
- how to socialize - do's and don'ts
- how to handle a domestic problem and how to ask for help, like losing one's key
- how to use local services

Further information for students

In order to succeed in activating your Finnish skills, 80% attendance in contact lessons is mandatory.

Evaluation methods and criteria

The course assessment is threefold:
1) A presentation of one of the course topics of everyday life in Finland. Group work.
2) An individual video clip of the surroundings of your apartment or service or a place for free time
3) A personal collection of vocabulary (20 cards according to the teacher's instuctions)

Evaluation criteria, fail (0)

The student participates in less than 80% of the contact lessons or fails to return the assignments according to the instructions.

Evaluation criteria, satisfactory (1-2)

The student can
- describe one's surroundings in a very simple way
- cope in some routine social encounters and manage to run some errands.
- initiate and end a brief discussion when the situation is familiar
- speak quite freely in some everyday situations even though needs a lot of help and support of others in interaction
- pronounce montly understandably despite of an accent and occational misunderstandings
- utilize the most frequent vocabulary
- utilize a some simple grammatical structures in free speech

Evaluation criteria, good (3-4)

The student can
- describe one's surroundings in a simple way
- cope in routine social encounters and manage to run some errands.
- initiate and end a brief discussion when the situation is familiar
- speak freely in some everyday situations even though needs help and support of others in interaction
- pronounce understandably despite of a possible accent and occational misunderstandings
- utilize the most frequent vocabulary with ease
- utilize a variety of simple grammatical structures in free speech

Evaluation criteria, excellent (5)

The student can
- describe one's surroundings in quite a simple way
- cope in routine social encounters and manage to run errands.
- initiate and end a brief discussion when the situation is familiar
- speak freely in most everyday situations with a little help and support of others in interaction
- pronounce understandably despite of a possible accent and occational misunderstandings
- utilizet frequent vocabulary with ease
- utilize a variety of basic grammatical structures in free speech
