Learning outcomes
The student is able to:
- speak and understand Finnish in very basic and familiar everyday situations
- find information in very short texts and write simple messages
- use some of the basic grammar structures
- become familiar with Finnish cultural manners and customs
- reach the target level of A1.1 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages

Contents:
How to describe oneself (personal information), numbers, telling the time, countries, languages, nationalities, family vocabulary,days of the week, months,pronunciation, basic grammar (positive and negative verb conjugation, case endings etc.), becoming familiar with Finnish culture and customs, etc.
Tutoring and communication:
Finnish language used on the lessons, English too always when needed
Evaluation methods and criteria
Learning objectives:
Basic skills in Finnish language
Having completed the study unit the student is able to:
- speak and understand Finnish in very basic and familiar everyday situations
- find information in very short texts and write simple messages
- use some of the basic grammar structures
- become familiar with Finnish cultural manners and customs
- reach the target level of A1.1 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages
The evaluation will be based on:
- tests (some vocabulary tests perhaps, at least final exam)
- homework & remote tasks
- presence and activity at the lessons
REQUIRED ATTENDANCE: 80 % OF THE LESSONS. The students are allowed to be absent 2 times during one term unless otherwise agreed.
Evaluation criteria, approved/failed
Grades 1-5 in use (0 if the course is not passed).
The final course grade consists of:
- the results of the tests and exam
- performance in making homework & remote tasks
- presence and activity at the contact lessons

The study unit is for those whose language of education and mother tongue are other than Finnish and Swedish and who have not studied Finnish before.
