Learning outcomes

The student is able to:
- analyse and develop his/her activity as a member of the work community and a manager
- apply labour legislation and collective agreements
- analyse the work community and promote wellbeing at work

Teaching methods

The study unit will start on-line according to the latest (7.1.2022) corona-guidelines. Also the second contact lesson 17.02.2022 16.00 - 18.30 will be online. See Pakki for the schedule. Students are informed of any changes in implementation as soon as possible.

Location and time

The study unit will start 21.01.2022 12.30 - 15.00 on-line according to the corona-guidelines. See Pakki for the schedule.

Learning materials and recommended literature

Teachers will provide relevant materials. All required reading will be either distributed via Canvas, available freely on the internet, or available in Finna as ebooks. In addition, legislation is available in the Finlex-service. Materials created by teachers (copyright holders) and only to be used for the purposes of this study unit.

Co-operation with working life and/or RDI

Assignments require reflection on students' current or past work experience. Assignments and study unit content aim to develop students' understanding of requirements of current working life.

Important dates

Contact sessions are directly visible in Pakki and not repeated here.
According to the degree regulations (section 18): students must be present at the first contact session (which is 21.01.2022 12.30 - 15.00) or notify their teacher in charge if they cannot attend. If they fail to notify the teacher of their absence in the first contact session, their enrollment will be rejected.
After the first contact day no new students are accepted on the course.

The study unit is suitable for exchange students.

The workload is approximately 135 hours total.

Topics to be covered on the study unit:
Understand the fundamental aspects of managing and leading organizations
Understand leadership as an influence process in organizations
Distinguish between leadership and management
Distinguish the trait, behavioral, and contingency theories of leadership
Introduction to management and leadership
Definition of Leadership and management
Interpersonal Effectiveness
Attributes of a Leader/ manager
Differences between management skills and leadership skills
Being a Leader, being a manager
Discuss some alternative views of leadership
Analyze the effects of self-managing teams on leadership

Further information for students

Communication will be handled via Canvas workspace message boards. Private messages to teachers should be handled via email. Tutoring is available upon request.

Tutoring:
Tutoring is available on beforehand set days and upon request. Personal discussion times should be pre-agreed with teacher.
Communication:
Zoom or Teams- application will be used for tutoring and general information sharing.
Canvas is used for formal information, material sharing and storing, returning assignments, etc.
If necessary, other means of communication will be agreed by the learning community commonly in the beginning of the study unit. Changes to preliminary program are possible, but the students will be notified if necessary

Evaluation methods and criteria

In this study unit the assessing of the competences will be done by using the criteria set for requirement level I.

Evaluation criteria, fail (0)

Study unit is rejected if
- all given assignments are not completed
- assignments do not fulfill the criteria of Satisfactory (1-2), below.

Evaluation criteria, satisfactory (1-2)

To achieve grade 1 the student must be able to
- use essential professional concepts when explaining various work practices and situations
- search for information in different sources
- report their work
- work under guidance using the skills and methods learned
- receive guidance
- work as a member of a team
- plan the progress of his/her work and use of time under guidance
- work safely and in accordance with the professional code of conduct
- follow the provided instructions and rules
To achieve grade 2, all previous criteria are achieved, and in addition part of criteria of Good (3-4) are achieved.

Evaluation criteria, good (3-4)

To achieve grade 3 student must be able to
- use professional concepts in a consistent manner when explaining various work practices and situations
- gather information and use his/her knowledge basis
- report in the agreed manner
- work using the skills and methods learned
- take part in guidance and utilise it
- engage in goal-oriented work in a team
- plan and manage the progress of his/her work and use of time
- detect safety-related risks
- justify his/her actions in accordance with the professional code of conduct
To achieve grade 4, all previous criteria are achieved, and in addition part of criteria of Excellent (5) are achieved.

Evaluation criteria, excellent (5)

To achieve grade 5 student must be able to
- use professional concepts extensively
- compare and choose relevant information
- report and communicate in a professional manner
- work independently, using the skills and methods learned
- anticipate his/her need for guidance
- promote the team’s work and team spirit
- manage his/her time appropriately, completing the agreed tasks at the required quality level
- work responsibly, applying the skills and methods learned
- plan and evaluate their work, taking safety and/or ethical aspects into consideration
