Alternative completion methods of implementation

According to the degree regulations (2024), Students are entitled to apply for recognition of prior learning regardless of where, when and how the competence has been acquired.

At Laurea, there are two different procedures for the recognition and accreditation of prior learning: a) accreditation of prior learning (competence acquired in higher education studies at another institution) and b) demonstration of competence (competence acquired in other ways). The recognition and accreditation of prior learning is initiated by the student themselves. The student is responsible for demonstrating and verifying their competence. The student is entitled to guidance for the recognition and accreditation of their competence. Further information in the student intranet.

You may also assess work-based learning as a way to acquire the competence needed. Read more in the student intranet.

Accreditation of prior learning can be used especially, if you have already completed previously
1. The study unit of this same name as a Laurea MOOC (https://smart.laurea.fi/en/tuote/basics-of-organizational-safety-security-and-risk-management-2/)
2. Laurea MOOC "Basic Theory of Corporate Safety, Security and Risk Management" (discontinued as of 2025)

Important dates

The course workspace will remain open until the end of the course deadline (see Timing), and all assignments must be completed before the workspace closes.

Forms of internationality

The study unit is suitable for exchange students.

Student workload

Workload of the study is measured in a way that to acquire the goal competence of the study, one credit corresponds to an average of 26.7 hours of work done by the student. The actual time needed varies e.g. according to prior competence.

Content and scheduling

The aim is that after completing the study unit you will be able to:
- describe the key concepts and elements of an organization’s safety, security and risk management and explain their significance
- describe the principles and key methods of risk management
- take into account the principles of sustainable development in the organization’s risk management.

Further information

The course is Bachelor's degree program level. Master's students may also take the course or join to familiarize themselves with the content, but the course cannot be included in a Master's degree.

If the course is not completed by the end date of the implementation, the student can enroll in the next MOOC implementation of this same study unit. Incomplete assignments cannot be transferred to the next implementation; all tasks must be redone.

The quality of the study unit implementation has been assessed and the self-evaluation report is available for example in Canvas.

Evaluation methods and criteria

Competence assessment is based on the descriptions of objectives in the curricula, and the level of competence is assessed according to the assessment criteria listed in the implementation plan for the studies" (Laurea degree regulations 2024).

The study unit follows point-based assessment. The course has five small tests and an online exam, all of which must be completed:
Module 1: test, max 10 points
Module 2: test, max 10 points
Module 3: test, max 10 points
Module 4: test, max 10 points
Module 5: test, max 10 points
Online exam: max 50 points
TOTAL 100 points.

You can try each test and online exam twice, (a better result is taken into account). A total of at least 50 points must be obtained from the tests and the online exam to pass the study unit.

In this study unit the assessing of the competences will be done by using the criteria set for requirement level I.
