Learning outcomes

The students will be able to
- identify cash flows generated into the future by capital budgeting decisions
- understand the time value of money and the importance of discounting future cash flows
- use different capital investment appraisal methods and apply them to determine whether or not a project is acceptable
- do the risk assessment and interpret how sensitivity and scenario analysis can help in decision making

Pre-assignment one month before the first contact session.

Friday 29.10.2021, 9-16.30 (What is capital budgeting, how to build a discounted cash flow model, Excel workshop)
Saturday 30.10.2021, 9-16.30 (Sensitivity, scenario and risk analysis, cash flow modeling case, Invest for Excel workshop in teams)
Friday 3.12.2021, 16.30-19.30 (Team presentations)

This course can also be completed virtually (Canvas). The detailed schedule for the contact days will be published in September.

Employer connections

We use Excel and Invest for Excel software for cash flow modeling. Invest for Excel can be used in the IT rooms at Laurea Leppävaara, and a link will be sent to the students in September, so you can use the software from your own computer. If you want to learn the use of the software earlier, you can download a trial version for one month.(www.datapartner.fi)

Invest for Excel® - System Requirements
Microsoft Excel 2010, 2013, 2016 or 2019, 32 or 64 bit or Office 365 Desktop.
Microsoft Windows 7, 8, 8.1 or 10, 32 or 64 bit

Invest for Excel is currently only supported on Microsoft Excel for Windows. There are ways to run it on a Mac computer, but these options require purchase of Windows operating system and Microsoft Excel for Windows licenses.
