Qualifications

This is applicable for Nursing studies staring autumn 2021 onwardes. The student needs to pass the test prior to clinical practice 3.

Learning outcomes

The aim of the test is to ensure the nursing student’s adequate professional language skills of Finnish in more demanding clinical practice.

Teaching methods

The test consists of a reading comprehension and an oral part. The test will take place at the campus.

Learning materials and recommended literature

Recommended reading of internal medicine, perioperative procedures, mental health or domiciliary care: e.g. Terveyskylä.fi, Käypä hoito instructions for patients, patient organisations' websites.

Forms of internationality

The test is aimed at students whose language of previous studies is other that Finnish or Swedish.

Student workload

Reading comprehension test 90 minutes, oral test 30 min.

Content and scheduling

The test will cover healthcare topics that the student needs to deal with in their 3rd clinical practice, such as internal medicine, perioperative procedures, mental health or domiciliary care.

The purpose of the test is to support Your possibilities of a successful clinical practice while the professional objectives get challenging. It is as well the UAS's way to ensure your future patients' safety.
Completing the Mid-studies test will be marked on your transcript of record as a part of demonstrating your professional language skills.
NB! You need to pass the test before accessing your 3rd clinical practice.

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

To pass the reading comprehension test, the student needs to show
gain at least 65% of the maximum points of the test.
To pass the oral test, the student reads a patient case in order to
- express themselves understandably (in terms of pronounciation)
- speak in coherent sentences
- be able to point out at least two care needs of the patient
- suggest a treatment accordingly
- use appropriate vocabulary (also other than mentioned in the case)

Accomplishment methods

All the degree programme in nursing students whose mother tongue or language of prior education is not Finnish, are required to take the test in Finnish competence.

Evaluation methods and criteria

The test will be conducted face-to-face at campus. The framework of the assessment is CEFR level B1.

Assessment criteria, fail (0)

The reading comprehension test will be failed, if the student gains less than 65% of the maximum points in the test.
The oral test will be failed if the student reads a patient case and
- cannot express themselves understandably (in terms of pronounciation)
- cannot form sentences, only lists separate items
- cannot point out at least two care needs of the patient
- cannot suggest a treatment accordingly
- only uses vocabulary of the case description
