Learning outcomes

The student is able to:
- describe the principles of ethical conduct for nurses and act according to them
- describe the ethical guidelines for nurses and act according to them
- describe the principles of collegial conduct and adhere to them
- describe the core terminology related to patient safety
- describe the responsibilities of the nurse in maintaining and promoting patient safety
- identify the areas of client and patient safety (care safety, equipment safety, medication safety) and be able to list factors that promote and jeopardize these aspects
- describe how adverse and hazardous events should be handled and reported (as part of patient safety culture)
- the essential guidelines for data protection in the nurse's work
- describe the main structures and legislation of the Finnish social and health care system
- describe the roles of different providers of social and healthcare services as part of the client and patient care chain
- describe the significance of digital services as part of social and healthcare services
- explain the nurse's responsibilities and duties in ensuring data protection and maintaining confidentiality

Teaching methods

Self-paced online course. The course is completed entirely independently by the end of the course deadline. You will study the material in an online learning environment, which includes study materials and assignments/tests. No personal feedback will be provided on the assignments.

Exam schedules

The course workspace will remain open until the end of the course deadline (see Timing), and all assignments must be completed before the workspace closes.

Laurean tutkintosäännön mukaisesti opiskelijalla on oikeus osaamisensa näyttämiseen. Aloitteen hankitun osaamisen tunnistamisesta ja tunnustamisesta tekee opiskelija. Osaamisen tunnistaa ja tunnustaa opintojakson vastuuopettaja tai muu korkeakouluyksikön johtajan nimeämä henkilö. Student workload

You will study independently online. You can complete the course on your own schedule. It takes approximately 81 hours to complete the course.

Content scheduling

Orientation to Finnish social welfare and health care is designed for those who have completed a nursing degree abroad and are applying for a nursing license in Finland. The course is also suitable for exchange students and those pursuing an international nursing degree.

The Study Unit consists of three parts:

1. Ethics and ethical principles

2. Customer and patient safety

3. Social welfare and health care service system Opens in a new window.

The assignments in each section must be completed according to the given instructions, and the sections must be completed in order. There is a short knowledge test between the sections, which must be completed in order to proceed to the next section. At the end of the course, the final test must be passed.

Further information

You can complete this MOOC in Finnish or English. It is recommended to take the MOOC in Finnish because some of the course materials are available only in Finnish (e.g., laws). You can switch languages at any time during the course.

The course is Bachelor's degree program level.

Enrollments are processed almost daily, allowing you to start the course flexibly when it suits you. You will receive a completion record for the course approximately two weeks after finishing. During holiday periods, enrollments and completion records are processed less frequently.

If the course is not completed by the end date of the implementation, the student can enroll in the next implementation. Incomplete assignments cannot be transferred to the next implementation; all tasks must be redone.
