Clinical Special Situations in Oncology Nursing (5 cr)

Learning outcomes

The student is able to:
- apply different treatment methods of oncology nursing and work as a nursing expert in a multidisciplinary cancer care team
- analyse acute and late adverse effects related to cancer treatments, justify applicable clinical nursing methods and assess their influence and impact
- analyse and interpret the haemodynamic overall situation of a patient with neutropenic infection in accordance with the nursing decision-making process
- apply the principles of family health care in the psychosocial support of patients with cancer and their next-of-kin
- justify the importance of nursing expertise in a multidisciplinary cancer care team

Teaching methods

The course is part of the supplementary studies. The requirement for participation is that the student has completed modules 1-3 of the basic studies in nursing/public health nursing at Laurea before the start of the course.

The studies include an orientation lecture, which is mandatory. The entire course is conducted as independent studies in the Canvas environment.

Content: The course focuses on the acute side effects of different cancer treatments based on their theoretical foundation, the long-term effects of cancer treatment, and applicable emergency situations. Additionally, the course covers the treatment of severe infections in cancer patients, with a particular focus on neutropenic sepsis and its management.

The objectives of the course are that the student can:

- Apply various cancer treatment methods and act as an expert in nursing within a multidisciplinary cancer treatment team.
- Analyze the acute and late side effects related to cancer treatments, justify appropriate clinical nursing methods, and evaluate their effects and effectiveness.
- Analyze and interpret the hemodynamic overall situation of a neutropenic infection patient according to the nursing decision-making process, including psychosocial support for the patient and their relatives.
-Justify the importance of nursing expertise in a multidisciplinary cancer treatment team.
Students accepted into the course will start by reviewing the basic principles of cancer patient care.

Completion alternatives

Opintojaksolla ei ole valinnaisia suoritustapoja. Opintojakson hyväksytty suorittaminen edellyttää opintojakson orientaation osallistumista sekä kurssitehtävien ohjeenmukaista suorittamista.

Opintojaksoa ei ole mahdollista arvioida osasuorituksena.

Kurssin päättymisen, 31.8.2025 jälkeen, ei uusia tehtäviä tai muita kurssisuorituksia oteta vastaan.

Student workload

Opintojakson kuormitus on laskettu käyttäen kuormituslaskuria, jossa 1 op = 27 tuntia opiskelijatyötä.
Uuden asian oppimisen sekä tiedonhankinnan kuormitus on laskettu kertoimella 1,5.

Opintojakso pitää sisällään 5 opintokokonaisuutta seuraavasti
1. Kertaa osaamisesi syövästä sekä syöpähoitojen yleisistä haittavaikutuksista (o,5op)
2. Syöpää sairastavan hoitopolku (2op)
3. Onkologiset hätätilanteet (2op)
4. Syöpää sairastavan ja hänen läheistensä psykososiaalinen tuki (0,5op)

Kukin moduuli pitää sisällään opiskelijan oppimista tukevan tehtävän, johon opastaminen toteutetaan orientaatiopäivänä.
