Learning outcomes

The student is able to
- describe the nurse’s responsibilities in the overall care of several patients*
- prioritise and manage their own work during a work shift
- find methods to manage challenging interactive situations in patient care and in the work community
- assess the development areas of their professional competence realistically and diversely based on the competence requirements for nurses
- recognise the workload factors of the work when starting to work as a nurse and find ways to reduce the workload**
- understand extensively spoken and written Finnish in nursing environment
- communicates fluently and spontaneously with patients and their significant others

The learning objectives have been modified starting on 1 January 2025:
*The verb 'assume' has been replaced with 'describe'
** 'during the transition phase' has been removed form the end of the sentence

Theme: Nurse's responsibility, independent decision-making and management of your own work

Placement assignment: Assessing your competence and create a competence portfolio

Teaching methods

Professional Development in Practice 7 15cr
The practice is tailored and can be separated in two parts, either in the beginning of nursing studies and as complementary study in the end of the nursing studies. The learning objectives has to be approved with the supervisor and the teacher.

Completion alternatives

Professional development in practice 7 can be completed as a paid practice in any nursing environment of your choice after 140 credits ready. Read more information on paid practice in Workseed.

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

The student is able to:
PROFESSIONAL KNOWLEDGE BASE, INFORMATION SEARCH AND REPORTING:
- use key professional concepts when explaining different work practices and situations
- search for information from different sources
- reporting
PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES AND WORKING LIFE DEVELOPMENT:
- act under guidance using the skills and methods being studied
- act with clients and/or partners
- accept guidance
TEAMWORK SKILLS, LEADERSHIP AND RESPONSIBILITY:
- act as a member of a group
- plan the progress of one's own work and use of time under guidance
- act safely and in accordance with professional ethical principles
- follow the instructions and rules given

Content scheduling

Placement is 10 weeks, 5 days/ week, 7,5-8hours/ day

The student should inform the unit immediately if they are sick and also the supervising teacher.
