Learning outcomes
The students can communicate understandably in English in different kinds of written and spoken language situations of the field. The students improve their English skills and know how to use English language materials relevant to higher education studies.
Content
The course includes the basics of the English language. It also offers the chance to practice different field-related oral and written communication situations and to increase the courage to use the English language. An essential target is to produce clear, logical and readable texts in different styles. The material used in spoken and written tasks is related to the field of health care and social services, such as the concepts, service systems, various working life situations and ethics. In addition, the students develop their language learning techniques (e.g. reading professional texts, studying vocabulary).
Teaching methods
This course includes in-class activity sessions on Tikkurila campus, individual and group work as well as learning assignments. You will revise the basics of the English language. You will also have the chance to practice different field-related oral and written professional communication situations, which will encourage you to use the English language.

The material used in spoken and written tasks is related to the field of health care and social services, such as their concepts, service systems, various working life situations and ethical issues. In addition, you will develop your language learning techniques using professional texts and audiovisual material.

3 Portfolio and final oral and written examination on the vocabulary, texts and tasks covered in the course 50%
An attempt to raise the grade may be made for those parts of the course that are evaluated, but not for pair or group work. Please remember that all learning tasks must be returned in order to receive a grade.

Students do not demonstrate competence in vocabulary and comprehension tasks nor in oral and written communication. Please remember that all in-class activity sessions on the campus are mandatory, and during the second last session, you will do a final exam.
