NOTE: the learning environment will be the same as used in Study Skills and Professional Orientation (first year of studies).

Teaching methods

This implementation is meant for students in Degree Programme of Safety, Security and Risk Management.

In this course you plan your studies and your career. One of the deliverables of the course is the preparation of a career plan. In addition to this, you will have two PSP discussions with your tutor, for which you will need to prepare. For preparation instructions, see Canvas workspace Study Skills and Professional Orientation, under Prepare for your PSP discussions.

Blended learning implementation:
The course is supported by a learning environment built into Canvas. The course has scheduled teaching or tutoring both on campus and remotely. Teaching is not recorded. Assignments are subject to personal feedback by the instructor.

Exam schedules

Accepting place in study unit at first physical or online contact session.

Note that this study unit is implemented over two semesters: autumn 2025 and spring 2026.

The PSP discussions will be scheduled separately at the beginning of the study unit with each student. Attendance in two PSP discussions, once each semester, is mandatory, in order to verify progress of studies and plan the students' path towards graduation.

Assignment deadlines and other scheduled returns will be in the workspace.

Student workload

One credit equals approximately 26.7 hours of work performed by the student; 2 cr = approx 53h.

-Contact sessions: 8h

-Assignments in workspace and individual studying: 35h

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

To pass the student must be able to
-Use essential professional concepts when explaining various work practices and situations
-Search for information in different sources
-Report
-Work under guidance using the skills and methods learned
-Receive guidance
-Work as a member of a team
-Plan the progress of his/her work and use of time under guidance
-Work safely and in accordance with the professional code of conduct
-Follow the provided instructions and rules

Further information

According to the degree regulations (section 18) “students must be present in the first contact session or notify their teacher in charge if they cannot attend. If they fail to notify the teacher of their absence in the first contact session, their enrolment will be rejected. Another student in the queue may be enrolled in the study unit in the place of the absent student.” (Laurea degree regulations) In the case of online studies the lecturer can also specify some other way than participation on an online meeting what is required from the student so that he/she verifies his/her attendance on the study unit (Decision by the vice president, education 7/2019).
