Learning outcomes

The student is able to
- understand the need for a sustainable global future
- identify different local and global challenges and possibilities of sustainable development and globalisation
- apply different ethical, creative and sustainable solutions for a fair and empowered society
- search for the best practices and multi-professional solutions for socially and culturally sustainable development within social services and community empowerment

Teaching methods

This year the Sustainable Global Future course is conducted in co-operation with Laurea partner Nazareth College from USA, with both teachers and students, and it will also be attended by the PIONEER network partners from Germany and Portugal. Kindly notice that this course will be rather intensive, as it only lasts less than a month (5-6.2023). There will be individual and pair/group assignments as well. The course includes attendance at World Village Festival (https://www.maailmakylassa.fi/en/in-english/) as well as a possibility to join Sustainability Science Days. The Sustainability Science Days is an international, three-day conference organised jointly by Helsinki Institute of Sustainability Science (HELSUS) and Aalto University on 24 - 26th of May 2023.

Also, students can complete 1-2 extra credits by hosting the US students during additional study visits (details offered once the course starts).

Learning materials and recommended literature

All relevant materials will be provided during the course.

Co-operation with working life and/or RDI

The course in conducted in co-operation with different international Laurea University partners, the Global Village Festival and Helsinki Institute of Sustainability Science (HELSUS) and Aalto University.

Further information for students

The study unit is suitable also for exchange students as well as YAMK/Master students. The content for YAMK/Master students will be modified according to their field of studies and includes especially the 3-day Uni conference Sustainability Science Days by HELSUS and Aalto University on 24 - 26th of May 2023 as well as Global Village Festival.

Approved performance requires attendance at lectures/workshops and the final seminar, as well as completion of all assignments.
