Learning outcomes
The students can communicate understandably in English in different kinds of written and spoken language situations of the field. The students improve their English skills and know how to use English language materials relevant to higher education studies.
Content
The course includes the basics of the English language. It also offers the chance to practice different field-related oral and written communication situations and to increase the courage to use the English language. An essential target is to produce clear, logical and readable texts in different styles. The material used in spoken and written tasks is related to the field of health care and social services, such as the concepts, service systems, various working life situations and ethics. In addition, the students develop their language learning techniques (e.g. reading professional texts, studying vocabulary).
Teaching methods
English instruction will be implemented in class and as independent study. The study unit includes an assessed task mor tasks.

Portfolio assessment criteria
To pass the course, all assignments must be completed according to instructions. For the smooth functioning of the course, deadlines have to be respected. The grade will be based on coursework and general English proficiency. A grading scale of 1-5 will be used a set out below.

Evaluation criteria, satisfactory (1-2)
1 – Passable (Prestructural)
The portfolio shows satisfactory effort in terms of learning and portfolio tasks. The student knows some of the content but does not transfer or apply it at all. The student has difficulty with some of the skills practiced, can communicate in English both orally and in writing in various working life situations passably, make use of research information in English and develop their professional language skills using different learning techniques. Some tasks may be partially done. The student does not reflect on his/her learning and the relations of the content. All work is produced either at B2 proficiency level or higher or if below B2, the portfolio shows such satisfactory effort and knowledge of the skills that were the proficiency level B2, the portfolio would be graded 2.

3 - Good (multistructural)
The portfolio shows good effort in terms of learning and portfolio tasks. The student knows a reasonable amount of content but does not transfer or apply it easily. The student can apply and reflect on the skills practiced, can communicate in English both orally and in writing in various working life situations, make use of research information in English and develop his/her professional language skills using different learning techniques. However, the student does not reflect on his/her learning and the relations of the content. All work is produced either at B2 proficiency level or higher or if slightly below B2, the portfolio shows very good effort and application of the skills that were the proficiency level B2, the portfolio would be graded 4.

5 – Excellent (extended abstract)
The portfolio shows excellent effort in terms of learning and portfolio tasks. The student can apply and reflect on the skills practiced, can communicate in English both orally and in writing in various working life situations, make use of research information in English and develop his/her professional language skills using different learning techniques. The student shows understanding of how to transfer the skills. All work is produced at B2 proficiency level or higher.
