Learning outcomes

The student is able to
- identify the role of services in international trade
- define internationalization strategies of servicesand determinants of success in exporting services
- analyse internationalisation modes of service companies in different sectors

Teaching methods

This course is designed for Laurea bachelor students interested in building a career in international business. The course focuses on the service sector, the fastest growing business sector that offer great potential for companies seeking growth in international markets. We expect you to have basic knowledge of service business incl. marketing.

After taking the course you will be able to:
- identify the role of services in international trade
- define internationalization strategies of services and determinants of success in exporting services
- analyse internationalisation modes of service companies in different sectors

Study unit will be implemented completely on-line. It consists of four chapters
Ch 1. Orientation
Ch 2. Landscape of service export
Ch 3. Service export modes and Case

Each chapter has a set of independent assignments. Assessment criteria will be informed for each assignment separately. Assignments will be graded by points (total 100 points).

There will be one online clinic/session for each chapter (see timetable below) to support your learning.
The course platform will be Optima and we will utilise Zoom Video Communications for Online Clinics./sessions.

Proceed through the chapters in a cronological order. Study the materials and complete the tasks of one chapter before moving to the next chapter.The course is designed so that you can do it in your own pace.However, pay attention to the deadlines for each chapter. The deadlines are there to structure your work and are to be followed. They will enable you to progress with the pace of your peers and also to get the most out of the discussions. If you for some reason cannot meet the deadline, remember to inform the lecturer in advance on the delay.

You will receive feedback for the tasks that you have returned by the deadline. Also delayed tasks (Chapters 1-3) that are returned before May 17th will be assessed, but no feedback will be given for them. Please pay attention to the deadlines and time your work!

Evaluation methods and criteria

Study unit consists of independent assignments. Assesment criteria will be informed in each assignment.
Passing the Orientation assignments will confirm your participation to this course.

Assignments will be graded by points (total 100 points).
Orientation assignments max 10 points
Landscape of International Service Business -assignments max 40 points
Service export modes and Case -assignments max 50 points


The points will be accumulated during the course and transferred to grades as follows
0 - 45 points = Fail
45 - 54 points Satisfactory (1)
55 - 64 points Satisfactory (2)
65 - 74 points Good (3)
75 - 84 points Good (4)
85-100 points Excellent (5)
