Learning outcomes

The student is able to
- communicate as a professional in field-specific tasks and intercultural contexts
- produce effective spoken and written texts using an appropriate style and register
- demonstrate knowledge of essential terminology needed in working life
- apply principles of interpersonal and organizational communication

Teaching methods

The course has both lesson in class as well as via Zoom. The classes in Zoom are NOT hybrid classes due to the nature of the lesson, so please make sure you can be at school premises.

Important dates

The course takes place in the spring term of 2021 and attendance is compulsory 75%. The first and last classes are mandatory.

Content and scheduling

The course progresses from individual work to working in large teams.
The study unit will contain work on the following themes:
• Intercultural communication and communication style
• Communication strategies in spoken and written communication
• Building rapport in interpersonal communication
• Communicating effectively and persuasively in presentations, meetings and negotiations
• The use of style and register in spoken and written texts
• Review of common business terms

Further information for students

Students need to have passed the initial language proficiency test prior to taking this study unit. If students do not pass the language proficiency test they need to complete R0170 Valmentava englanti as well.

The study unit corresponds to the requirements of Bachelor's level education.
According to the degree regulations (section 18) “students must be present in the first contact session or
notify their teacher in charge if they cannot attend. If they fail to notify the teacher of their absence in the
first contact session, their enrolment will be rejected. Another student in the queue may be enrolled in the
study unit in the place of the absent student.” (Laurea degree regulations) In the case of online studies
the lecturer can also specify some other way than participation on an online meeting what is required
from the student so that he/she verifies his/her attendance on the study unit (Decision by the vice
president, education 7/2019).

Evaluation methods and criteria

The final grade is based on the following:
Spoken communication 50%, 2.25 ECTS
Written communication 50%, 2.25 ECTS
All parts must be passed in order to complete the study unit.
