Learning outcomes

The student is able to
- describe the growth and developmental stages of clients of different ages and transition phases in families
- describe the normal course of pregnancy and giving birth as well as medical grounds for care given during them
- describe the main illnesses in children, adolescents and the elderly as well as the medical grounds for treatment
- plan, implement and evaluate nursing of children, families, people of working age and the elderly
- identify factors that safeguard the health and well-being of clients or increase their vulnerability of different ages and their significant others
- promote the interaction, participation and rehabilitation of vulnerable and multicultural clients and their significant others in the care process
- evaluate the social (services) and health care service processes of vulnerable client groups and provide guidance on the use of services for these clients
- plan, implement and evaluate groupguidance on health and well-being
- analyse special needs related to multicultural client relationships and immigration in social welfare and health care
- recognise social security benefits and possibilities available to clients of different ages and their significant others

Teaching methods

Exchange students may be involved in the studies. The language of instruction is mainly Finnish, English is used in the materials.

Semester info 23.3.2020, by participating in which the student ensures that he / she completes the course according to the degree rules. The course includes 2 YleSH exams (Pediatric Nursing näytöt and Elderly Exam). Matters related to exams are discussed in more detail in the course info.

Part 1. FAMILY NURSING 6 cr
Activating and participatory contact teaching, case work, simulation and workshop work, network assignments and flipped learning, PBL, team learning.

Part 2. ADULT AND ELDERLY CARE 4 cr
Activating and participatory teaching, case work, flipped learnig, online assignments, class and workshop work.

Location and time

Lectures are conducted as zoom lectures, workshops as contact teaching. We follow Laurea's instructions regarding the current corona situation, so changes are possible.

(nutrition, exercise, fall prevention, abuse, mental health, intoxicants, gerotechnology, functional assessment, server system, acute situations, home care, memory disorders, non-drug therapies)
- Special features of healthcare for people of working age
(Electronic health promotion, occupational diseases, work ability support, functional ability assessment, self-measurement, musculoskeletal disorders, unemployment, ear rinsing)

Evaluation methods and criteria

More detailed evaluation criteria for the parts of the courses are announced and reviewed in the course orientations. Absence practices and replacements for the course are agreed upon at the beginning of the studies.

Part 1 FAMILY NURSING (K5-T1/fail)
- Workshops: Passed / failed. Absence must be compensated.
- Pediatric lääkelaskut: accepted / rejected. Must be completed before IV training.
- Pediatric online course: to be completed / accepted. Recommendation for working in pairs.
- Gynecology online course: to be completed / accepted. Recommendation for working in pairs.
