Learning outcomes

The student is able to:
- write a CV in Finnish
- apply for a job
- be interviewed for a job
- present their workplace
- write work-related emails
- understand and use general work vocabulary

Teaching methods

The course consists of daytime contact lessons as well as independent studies; individual, pair and group assignments. To assure possibility of gaining the learning objectives mandatory attedance on contact lessons 80%.
Starting level B1.1. The course aims at level B1.2.
NB! The course is mainly aimed at Degree students of Social Services and Nursing.
Main topics of the course are
- What kind of a professional are they looking for? Core vocabulary of job descriptions.
- My story so far. Grammatical tools for building a narrative.
- My future working place. Core vocabulary of working environments in social services and nursing.
- Hire me! Describing one's education, work experience and other skills both orally and in writing. Grammatical tools for writing a coherent text.
- What's this all about? Core vocabulary of current issues in social services and nursing in media.
- There needs to be a change! Structural tools for argumentation and stating one's opinion.

Location and time

Contact lessons 14.1. - 12.3. daytime in Tikkurila.

Learning materials and recommended literature

The course material will be provided by the teacher. The students will work mostly with authentic text and other sources related to one's profession. Suggested additional reading to brush up grammar: Kuparinen, K. & Tapaninen, T. Oma suomi 2. Helsinki: Otava.

Co-operation with working life and/or RDI

The students practise their oral skills in a project called Minä luen sinulle dealing with working environments of elderly care and disability services.

Forms of internationality

The course is aimed at student with other than Finnish previous education. This will bring topics of cultural sensitivity and multicultural team work as a part of the contents.

Students workload

5 crs = 135 hours of student's work. Contact lessons approx 40 hours, project planning, implementation and evaluation 10 hours, assignments and independent studies approx. 85 hours.

Evaluation methods and criteria

The student will compile a portfolio to be used in seeking a job or a working practise place. The course assessment will consist of several assigments related to this. Methods of peer review, self-assessment and teacher evaluation will be used. The evaluation criteria is linked to level B1 description in CEFR: https://europass.cedefop.europa.eu/resources/european-language-levels-cefr.
The grade will decreased by a grade if the student fails to meet the deadline of assignments.

The student has not attented the contact lesson as instructed AND/OR The student has not completed the assigments according to the instructions OR The students performance is either to meagre or too simple in terms of meeting level 1 description.

Evaluation criteria, satisfactory (1-2)

Spoken interaction:
The student can understand the most of the main points of clear standard speech in one's professional field when the delivery is relatively slow and clear. The student can deal with most frequent situations likely to arise whilst working. The student needs help and support to assure understanding.
The student can enter into conversation on topics that are familiar, of personal interest or pertinent to everyday life (e.g. family, hobbies, work, travel and current events). The student needs repetition and help of other in order to keep up in the discussion. The student can connect phrases in a very simple way in order to describe experiences and events and one's plans and ambitions as well as briefly give some reasons and explanations for opinions and plans. The student can narrate a story related to one's own experiences.
Written language skills:
The student can understand texts that consist mainly of high frequency everyday or job-related language. The student can understand descriptions of employers needs, jobs and working environments.
The student can write simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest. I can write documents describing personal experiences and expressing opinions.
