Learning outcomes

The student is able to
- understand the Finnish social and health care system in the context of national and international social and health policy
- identify and evaluate the social and health needs on individual and community level in Finland in comparison to his/ her own country
- recognise differences / similarities in current developments and innovations in the social and health care service systems, social and health care programs, laws, regulations and economic factors in comparison to his/ her own country
- recognise different methods of client and patient empowerment within social and health care in comparison to his/ her own country

Content

- global and national trends, current developments and innovations in health issues, social and health policy
- social and health needs in Finland and in other countries, prevention of diseases and client empowerment
- social and health care service systems, service and care chains, regulations, organisations, economical factors, applied welfare technologies
- guidance, consulting and networking within client and patient empowerment

Teaching methods

In this study module, students will gain expertise on different innovative solutions and best practices aimed to promote health and wellbeing globally, at individual, community and society level. Students will be able to analyze and evaluate the social and health care service systems, social and health care programs, laws, regulations and economic factors that are relevant both in a Scandinavian welfare state as well as in their home countries.
The studies are conducted in English, using both lectures and workshops as well as individual and group tasks as learning methods. Contact lessons take place at Laurea Tikkurila campus during daytime / weekdays. For the final written assignment, students can choose a topic that specifically interests them.

One credit (1 ECTS) equals approximately 26.7 hours of work performed by the student.

Evaluation methods and criteria

In this study unit the assessing of the competences will be done by using the criteria set for requirement level II.
PROFESSIONAL KNOWLEDGE BASIS, INFORMATION SEARCHING AND REPORTING
To achieve grade 5 student must be able to
- analyse the acquired information, draw conclusions and combine theoretical knowledge with experiential knowledge
To achieve grade 3 student must be able to
- critically evaluate information and justify their actions with science-based knowledge
To achieve grade 1 (or pass) student must be able to
- use professional concepts in a consistent manner and demonstrate his/her familiarity with the knowledge basis
- report and communicate in a professional manner
